Macs are cheaper, but are they faster?

Mac vs. PC debate

LinuxInsider writes about between Macs and PCs: "About a month ago, I compared the cost for Apple's Latest News about Apple desktop, server and laptop products to their nearest Dell equivalents and discovered that Macs generally cost less than comparable PC products. That was a bit of surprise, but the truly astonishing thing that came out of the comparison was that Dell's product line extends marginally below Apple's at the low end, but has nothing to stack up against Apple's 17-inch Powerbook, X-Serve/X-RAID combination, or Cinema displays at the high end. Bottom line: when you upgrade the PCs enough to allow an approximately apples to apples comparison, Apple turns out to offer both lower prices and a broader range than Dell."

    The news here...

The news here is that it was published as an article. I generally sit down and do this comparison about once a year, and Apple and Dell always come out very close. Usually Apple is slightly in the lead. The only real difference is that Apple's low end doesn't go as far down, Dell's high end doesn't reach up as far, and Apple's come with more features you can't opt out of.

    WHO CARES!

In the end it doesnt matter which runs faster, PCs will still be running that hog of an OS called Windows and well be cruising along on OSX.

    Everyone Knows

Dell makes the biggest piles of garbage in the PC world. They are not even worth the cardboard BOX they come in!

    All well and good...

But translating those facts, of which we are all aware, to the masses is the problem. With the Fear Uncertainty Doubt (FUD) mindset consciously or unconsciously heaped upon by 'friends' of the average person, the buyer thinks there is only Windows or is scared to look at alternatives. If Apple were to take their campaign on a more of a 'look what we can do' tact and I don't just mean iApps and uber expensive professional multimedia software - I mean everyday programs that run better (more elegant MS Office, more integrated Adobe Apps etc) and even hint at the better than usual selection of Top Ten games available for Mac, then maybe Apple will take a leap in market share... 1% market share increase woud be a 15% turnover increase to Apple.

    i don't know maybe I dreaming...

    Cyngus, I did read it...

Im just saying that everyone makes a big deal about this but they also forget the most important part and thats the OS. Even if PCs were faster they still run Windows. Get my point?

    Great article by the way.

    the cracks grow

in the foundation of the walls of mighty M$. three years ago there were only articles about M$'s next great direction in the tech rags, those have been replaced by "maybe Linux" articles and now the press is popping out these "hey these Macs are pretty cool" stories. This is a sea change but it takes time. yes the FUD factor is in effect, yes there is a channel of tens of thousands of PC hawkers that will hang onto their crappy source of income and delay the eventual quashing of M$'s dominance, patience grasshoppers, Rome wasn't built in a day, M$'s little dynasty is/was a flash in the pan in the face of technology history, a result of IBM not taking PC's seriously and nearly imploding, we will feel its detrimental effects for what will seem like a long time but that too will pass. Without that little hiccup who knows Apple may have been a division of IBM?!? Apple is quite honestly not prepared to be the majority PC vendor yet, look at the production and fullfillment problems they have with the small percentage of the market they have now. They need to grow carefully. We have the man to lead the way even if he's personally a jerk, Long live Jobian Caesar!
