Apple ships iMac G5 orders

Apple today began notifying customers of their iMac G5 shipments. The new iMac G5, announced at Apple Expo Paris, is shipping in limited quantities to both retail stores and directly to customers. One MacNN reports receiving shipment confirmation of his 17-inch iMac G5, slated for delivery later this week. says that both configurations are currently shipping directly from Apple to end users and to flagship Apple retail stores.

    I wonder if it's a 1.6Gh

I ordered a 17" 1.8Ghz on 8/31/04 at 6:30AM EST (right after the announcement) and my order still says "on or before 9/29/04".

I also customized it with a 160Gb HD, more memory, internal bluetooth, and Airport Extreme. I wonder if that's the holdup.

    Any ideas?

    Same here

I ordered the exact same configuration at 6:45am and mine says the same thing. Apple is no help on getting more information on the order, that's all they can tell me. I know it's unreasonable to be upset about shipping, but I really need this machine and have been waiting for months.

I bet that Apple is just shipping stock configurations right now. That's so they can claim the machines shipped on time.

I love the fact that ordering more actually penalizes us.

Yeah, if you discount the fact they were supposed to be announced in June. So, basically, to 'ship on time', all apple had to do was announce they would announce a new computer in 3 months, then announce it 3 months later for shipment a couple of weeks AFTER that (what, like they didn't know it was going to be announced?????)

    re, re cool

A bit hostile are we? The fact of the matter is that they announced it and shipped on time. I'd prefer that they do this, then announce a product 3 months earlier and start shipping it 4 months after the announcement. IMHO, waiting until you've got the product seems less desperate.

As for the BTO orders, this has always been the case for many products including Apple computers. If you want the machines to ship in bulk you need a bunch of standard machines. You can't expect them to load up thousands of machines in random configurations and hope they meet demand.

Well, for you it must sound like they shipped it on time, but they, in essence, announced the thing in june when they said "We're announcing a new iMac G5 in September and stopping orders on the current ones". So they're still delivering 3 months after they announced it.

I guess you'll be happy in the future when they pre-announce all their stuff. Hey, why don't you look at all their new product announcements as pre-announcements, and then pretend the "We're shipping them!" press releases are the actual announcements, and then you can pretend Apple is doing a good job.

Me, I'm looking at a product (the new iMac) that would've been killer for back-to-school, but Apple doesn't even show it off until AFTER school starts, after students have bought their new computers. Seems like Apple does that EVERY YEAR! Who the h*** thinks up these schedules?

    Why is everyone so angry?

"I guess you'll be happy in the future when they pre-announce all their stuff. Apple was forced to announce that there was going to be a G5 iMac because they had run out of G4 iMacs. This needed to be addressed. They revealed that it was based on the G5 so those who really wanted one would wait. Announcing that there was going to be a G5 iMac was NOT the initial release of this computer. There were no stats, no images, no pricing,...NADA.

My initial comment of improvement was comparing Apple's announcements in the past when an actual product was released (images, stats, pricing...etc) and then Apple said order in 1 month, shipping in 3 months. If you're going to be late on a product, wait until you can ship it, then announce it. But I guess you can't win, if you guys weren't whining about shipping delays, you'd be whining about product release delays.
