iMac G5 look-alike spotted at Intel Developer Forum

At the Intel Developer Forum, Intel's model digital home contained an all-in-one PC with a has been available for several weeks and features an integrated webcam, "so it's definitely not a quick copy of Apple Computer's latest creation. It does boast a 17-inch-wide screen like the iMac, and it even touts new cooling technology for quieter operation--also a feature on the latest Mac," according to CNET News.com. The report indicates that it will only be available in Korea.

Hmm, one is already available for several weeks (albeit only in Korea) vs another that is not shipping until end-of-month.

The iMac was not an original design. I just could not find the picture to prove it, and this is not the computer I had in mind either.

What's important

I don't know if Apple's ever completely invented something from scratch. They take on an idea and just do it better than anyone else ever could. And what's what I love about it.

The machine on the picture is uglier than ... er, I can't even think of a comparison.

One can't help but notice the power brick to the left of the stand, as well as the mess of wires to the right. Is that what's being compared to the iMac? Pathetic.

... and it is not the iMac, nor its inspriation.

That clunky thing has been around for at least a year. MS showed it off as "where PCs are going to be in the future". Just because a computer has a flat screen on it does not make it the same as the new iMac.

That is a plastic-y piece of c*** with its guts hanging all over outside, just as it was before. I don't think Apple, who has consistently revolutionized industrial design said: "Okay, let's just sit this round out and copy that Korean crapbox we saw last year."

The stand and cooling system are eerily familiar. Anyone think the Asian manufacturer of the iMac leaked the specs to a competing firm before iMac production was underway?

a) That's hardly iMac-like. It's an all-in-one LCD, and it's partly white. There the resemblance ends. This ungainly unit is great proof of just what a design triumph Apple achieved with the iMac.

b) Apple's had the iMac done for months, waiting for G5 supplies to improve. And you can bet they started design LONG before that PC, since the iMac has so many other engineering feats. That PC company didn't even bother building the power brick internally!

There comes a time..

There comes a time where you hit a wall when designing something, where it's going to look like other products in its category. This is one of one of them. When you build the computer into the back of the screen, there's not a lot of things you can do outside of the materials and size, that you can vary to differentiate yourself from others.

It's like toasters or microwaves, at some point they are all going to have the same basic design. It then becomes a matter of features. In the case of the iMac those features are speed and OS X.

If you check out the specs of the Lluon, it has shared memory graphics! And all these people were complaining about the 5200 ultra in the iMac...

last design was better...

...in many functional ways, and has a truly unique design "look" with the articulated arm. That arm also allowed a wide range of adjustment for the display that the current design poorly lacks. The current design, while very "clean" ("A Hard Day's Night" anyone?), has far more in common with existing and future all-in-one PC systems.

Apple has allowed the designers far too much control, and now iMacs are like women's fashion - they change every year or so even if there was nothing bad about the "old" design...!

Actually, the Korean model looks like something from the set of Space 1999...

While I liked the design of the last generation iMac better (everyone I know that has one loves the ability to easily reposition the screen), the fact is they weren't selling. The new chips couldn't be housed in the Luxor-lamp base because there wasn't room for the cooling necessary. So this wasn't a change for change sake - they had to do something. Besides, this is only the third iMac form factor in six years. It's not like they've been THAT quick to change!

Yeah, its not like Apple has ports on the back of its computer to plug a keyboard, mouse, other accessories into, that would make it look like that. Of course not.

At least the Lluon is shipping. Comparing the picture of a shipping product in use vs that of a product not shipped and without any cables - leave it to the zealots to give any story a positive Apple spin!

lluon seems to also have a built-in webcam, memoery card readers, 512MB RAM< wireless KB/mouse, and a remote too. Funny how no one mentioned that too.

I am not going to buy or recommend a lluon but I am not going to be an zealot either.
