    re: Attention

Sorry, but gap-less play would be a nice feature. Obviously lives aren't hanging in the balance on whether or not Apple includes it, but it really shouldn't be that big of a deal to add it to iTunes. I mean, they built it from the SoundJam code, and SJ had no problem loading the next mp3 into memory while the current one was playing, so there was no gap. "Join CD tracks" is just stupid -- I may not always want to listen to those two songs together, especially if I'm shuffling.

    Petition effectiveness

How effective are these online petitions? Apple already has a means to submit product improvement suggestions (don't they?). Might Apple be more likely to notice direct feedback?

    Pink Floyd?

I just added my signature, commenting that Dark Side of the Moon has gaps between the most important transitions (such as Brain Damage and Eclipse) - but then I read all the other signatures. Funny, about every ten signatures, someone else mentions the exact same album and artist. Lot of Pink Floyd fans have iPods. I see marketing potential.

    CDs vs file-based disks

Audio CDs are recorded like old vinyl records, that is the data is recorded in a continuous stream starting from the inside of the disc and moving out to the edge.

The data on the disk is not really in "files" or "tracks" as such, its just one big glob of data that can be read and interpreted as "tracks" by a CD player.

Music files on an iPod or in iTunes are separate logical files, sometimes strewn about a hard disk. One file does not end where another file begins - unless you stitch them together that way. This is what the "join CD tracks" option does.

And that is what you would need for music files not coming off a CD. Or some more/advanced logic that "knows" which tracks are related and pre-load them, in order, and play them from a buffer non-stop.

That is not an insignificant feat with a lot of catch-22s and other issues (what do you do if your buffer runs dry and you need to spin up the disk?).

I'd like to see more advanced features for this and for Audible files, but some group in Apple must sit down and figure it all out and get it working in a wide range of hardware (iPods) and somehow in iTunes (Mac and Windows) and actually work properly.

Petitions are useless, just keep sending feedback - no one in Apple (engineer or management) will ever be motivated by an activist-ish petition. Unless the PR will align with whatever Apple is already doing.

    Still no simple shuffle

I've requested, several times, frontpage shuffle in the iPod. It's been added in other models but I like my red backlighting and my current ipod was a gift for doing someone a favor, so I'm not getting rid of it. This, too, is not difficult to add. Apple still ignores the requests. Just like they've ignored several other requests I've made that would make the system (OS X in general) more usable to hearing-impaired people like mine. They also haven't fixed the random lockups I (and other people) are constantly reporting after a number of patches to the system (general version number increases, itunes, airport, etc.) Sometimes, I don't think they read the feedback, either.
