Self-confessed 'Apple-hater' offers iPod review

Positive iPod review

HardwareGeeks.com has , whose experience with the iPod has made him thinking about getting a Mac: "I guess in the end I am not much of an Apple hater after all. I honestly have no real complaints about the iPod and it's a spectacular product. I am really thinking about getting an iBook since I am on the market for a laptop but since the laptop I was considering cost $800 and the PowerBook G4 with similar specs is in the $2000 range I might have to hold off on that for a while if I do decide to get an iBook. Heck, I maybe even get a Power Mac G5. If the iPod is any indication on the quality of products Apple has to offer then maybe they are worth the high price so many people criticize Apple about."

But the truth lies in the fact that Apple has one h*** of a product and once tested by most advocated "mac-haters," they find that Apple is well above the standard of their Windows counterparts.

The article isn't accessible right now, but I have to seriously doubt this crazy comparison. He probably has a 'must-have' that is only available on the PB. But that's not "similar specs".

Apple stores should have a try-before-you-buy rental thing set up to show users what they really need versus what they think they need based on "specs".

One, this almost seems a little too pat. I'm having a hard time believing he was too anti-Apple in the first place. I'm a die-hard anti-Windows user, but this guy sure didn't seem to back up his anti-Appleness with anything other than he claimed to be. No technical or asthetic reasons for not liking the platform. I won't go for far as to cry "Plant" but I think it might be some Apple fan secretly trying to further the switcher campaign. Not casting judgement, just an observation.

Second, being g** isn't a choice. Therefore taking it totally out of the realm of comparison to a computer platform preference. It's like being a lefty... sure, you can to do everything with your right hand, but it doesn't feel quite right, or comfortable. And I speak from experience on both those matters.

Why would anyone switch to a computer platform just b/c of a home electronic device made by the same company? If he/she is so easily swayed, his/her opinion means little.

In regards to the prices for a PC Laptop versus a Powerbook what he doesn't mention in the story (but explains in their own forums) is that he is a PC dealer.

The $800 dollar price he quoted is a discounted price available to him in a special deal. I don't think it was his intent to make a bad price comparison but instead his writing style really is based off his own experiences and what is available to him.

When I was in High School several years go I was talking to a friend of mine. I was telling her about how I loved the Mac, but felt alone and isolated in a PC world. But then I felt better because I found online forums and support groups and how there is a small but loyal group of Mac people out there and how we have a huge EXPO every year in SF and how I would never use a PC at home EVER! She looked at me and said, "Well if I didn't know you were talking about computers I would think you were talking about coming out!"
There is nothing wrong with the analogy from Glasspusher; Glasspusher certainly isn't the first to make it.

He wasn't comparing using a Mac to being g**. He was comparing mac-haters to those who are anti-g**. You know the type. The ones that scream vitrol about how it debases all of society, how g** marriage destroys family values and lessens those currently married, yet have never met a g** person (that they know of), and have no actual argument besides "They're sick!", "Its not natural" and "The bible says its a sin!".

Just go all the way back to the 80s. The complaints were simply "Its not a real computer" and "Its a toy!". But these were from those who never even touched one, let alone knew how it made computing so much better than the freakin' DOS-based PC. Until, of course, Windows came out, and then a GUI was so great and all, and, oh, yeah, the Mac, who cares, its just a toy...

There are tons of laptops available for $800. If you care to actually lookat what the rest of the world is doing, you'd find that out.

I can't wait for him to get a PB and have the battery burn some marks on him. :) He will really hate Apple then.

I think what the writer meant to say in the headline was self professed, not self-confessed. Everyone who confesses does it on his or her own behalf, so it's redundant.

Yes, you can get a laptop for $800 bucks. He was stating he could get a Sony Vaio for $800 because he can get a discount but the price for the Vaio without would be about $1500... gee look at that... the powerbook goes for about $1600... and the Powerbook has a 20 gig larger hard drive. We won't even get into the performance of a 1.4 Celeron that it comes with.

Sorry to rain on your fudge-packing crusade there testudo! You arguments are comedy. And yet, although I wish to still keep on the subject of APPLE COMPUTERS, I felt glasspusher's analogy a poor one. I say this because these two subjects are of two different realms. We are trying to discuss why one would choose an Apple computer over its Windows counterpart--ie. superiority, ease of use, stability--especially after being Anti-apple. Not homosexuals, who's lifestyle is their own free-agency, albeit a lifestyle CHOSEN for other reasons--as those reasons may vary depending on who you talk too and have nothing to do with superiority, ease of use, nor stability as it pertains to computers. So, I'll restate my claim: bad analogy. So let's get back on topic shall we?

Macs are not high priced

That Macs are high priced is simply idiocy. Macs are high end and priced accordingly.

Go ahead and price:

a Wintel box with a nice aluminum case (nice meaning still not as nice as the G5 case being it is on par in craftsmanship to a Ferrari 360)
a multi-processor motherboard with 5 PCI-X slots and AGP with 8 slots for 3200 DDR RAM
the two most high-end Intel or AMD processors
a killer graphics card and sound card with digital in and out
a 160GB hard drive and CD-RW/DVD+-R Drive
the fans, cooling, cabling and powersupply apparatus
and Windows XP Pro

It comes out to a lot more $$$ than a 2.5Ghz G5.

So sensitively you react to a figure of speech that refers to the act by which g** persons do indeed participate in, albeit not a popular figure of speech. It's good to see that you're not stereotypical with comments of persons from Texas and Idaho or people of religion too--but I'm sure all your comments were not meant to be hateful with terms like bigots and boorish pricks in them. What is wrong with you people? The original post made an analogy about anti-g** people that (although in my opinion misplaced) really wasn't particularly controversial, and you both turned it into this hate-spewing rant.

Why would a person "Choose" to subject themselves to this vitriol? The best argument is that "uh...there's this guy I know who's bi and has lots of partners some male, some female.... so it must be a choice." Yeah. Logic like that is what made Rush L. famous.

Beyond that...um...point, the rest of these posts seems to be being obnoxious hate spewing rubbish about a group of people who are entirely irrelevant to the point of the article. It is fundamentally unnecessary for either of you to spew the obnoxious hatred, make disgusting insulting references to people's sexual habits.

If you want to live in a theocracy where everyone fits the mold that extreme religious leaders choose, move to Iran. (iraq is too liberal)

PS: This comes from a guy who is not g**, has no close g** friends, and who generally believes in traditional Republican party values... fiscal conservatism, small government interference, and HONESTY. Again, I'll state this one more time and I hope not to have to repeat myself any more. There have been no statements of hate that have been posted by myself. I suggest you read the posts that I've written. Plain and simple. I've shared my opinion on the free agency of man in general, and how that correlates to the choice g** individuals make as to their sexual preference. So stop with all this "hate-spewing," "vitriol," "obnoxious hatred," and "violent haters" c***. Where do you come to such a conclusion? I suggest you use your brain, think about what you say, and respond to the points that have been given and not give into your emotions and make false claims about persons you don't even know. By the way, I suggest you dig deeper into your vocabulary and not use adjectives that mirror Loupus. Your post was essentially a repeat as to what he stated; all they way down to the word "vitriol." Which leads me to my next point:

I only responded with my opinion to testudo's post after he went off on his g**, stereotypical tyrade on anti-g** persons. Just because one is anti-g**, you assume that that person has hate for those who are g**, are phobic, or ignorant which is not true by any means. It may be in some cases, but for the majority, I think it's just a difference in opinion on what is morally right or wrong. Which leads me to my second point:

Do you honestly believe that a person is born g**? Do you honestly think that at 5 years of age a girl or boy is realizing that he or she is g** or even thinking about such things for that matter? Marinate on that for a while and honestly reflect on these questions. Some of you may argue, that it might come to those individuals "naturally" or that it just "felt right" at a particular point in their life. But my rebuttle to such arguments would be that the "natural" and "felt right" feelings are emotions that are LEARNED by some catalyst in a person's environment. From conception kids LEARN how to react to certain stimuli in their environment, they don't just pop out pre-wired to be g**. What you do by essentially following your logic that persons are pre-disposed to being g** is basically strip away your God-given gift of free-agency. Have you noticed I've referred to this a whole bunch? I do because it's a powerful gift. How so you ask, because you take away the accountability for your choices once you state that "we're just born that way."

So, when sick adolescent persons molest little children, are you going to say they CHOSE to do so because they have problems, or are you going to believe them when they say, "I'm just born that way and am pre-disposed to liking children." I could go on and on with such examples. That's why in previous posts I have stated that such a choice--being heterosexual or homosexual is just that-your free-agency. I have no problems with persons making that choice, but like I said before, take responsiblity and accountability for your choice, because you will one day be held accountable, in my humble opinion. And as far as one's free agency to be married, that is a whole different ball game as trying to redefine this will undoubtedly effect many Americans morally, financially, and as a civilization as we know it. So, let's not go there either. What were we talking about?...Oh yeah, a person switching to the Mac platform! Let's get back on topic.
