Prudential: more G5 chip delays possible

More G5 chip delays?

Prudential Equity Group said the for Apple could be "worse than anticipated" due to manufacturing delays from IBM, according to Forbes: "Following a series of recent checks on Apple, we believe that availability of the company's 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz G5 processors may be worse than initially anticipated," it said. "Apple had previously stated that it expected to have shortages of its 1.8 GHz and 2.0 GHz processors through July, with supply catching up in August. We now believe that IBM may be having difficulty meeting its revised supply commitments." Prudential maintained its "neutral weight" rating and $27 target price, noting that the constraints may lead to further delays for the G5 iMac and possible delays for PowerMac G5 shipments.

    History repeats itself

Oh, we were all soooo happy when Apple ditched Moto for IBM. Can you say "Here we goo again."

The Colossus of Armonk seems to be no better. I wonder if my dual 2.5 will ever ship now.

    Come ON!

If I was Apple I would try to make their own chips. I mean why does IBM care about apple? 3% market share they can care less. I mean it's IBM. I think it's time for Apple to bring out the intel version of OS X .

    AMD or Intel

Let's see. Faster chips, cheaper chips, and availability of chips.

    Re: Come ON!

It does seem like deja vu for Apple, but one thing that makes it more settling is that ALL the chip manufacturers are experiencing difficulty with the 90 nm manufacturing processes. It'll buy Apple some time and if IBM improve their methods before anyone else, we'll see the GHz gap turn into the MHz gap again.

    a trend

Take any announced availability date + 30-90 days = actual ship date.

    Not so fast…

"If I was Apple I would try to make their own chips."

Dude, IBM has more engineers dedicated to chip design than Apple has employees. It would take all of Apple's $5 billion to build a G5 fabrication plant, and they still wouldn't have the technical know-how to run it.

"I think it's time for Apple to bring out the intel version of OS X."

Why, so they can stop making huge profits on lucrative hardware and become a wanna-be Microsoft instead? Besides, the PowerPC architecture is considerably considerable to x86.

...they all signed up a contract with IBM for chips in their next gen systems...how are they going to produce 30 times the volume if they can't even make enough chips for puny ol' Apple...is this the end of console gaming as we know it?

    wait til friday

i think friday will be very telling. many folks who had orders for G5/2.5s delayed were given 8/20 as their new shipping dates. if 8/20 comes and there's a flood of more delays there may be some weight to this report.

however, i wonder where the data is to back their claims up? who did they talk to at IBM? Apple? none of these guys are giving any guidance on additional delays (only 6 more weeks left to the financial quarter, gotta start issuing profit warnings if there's going to be a problem!) so, this is all just based on their own speculation. if you place an order for G5/2.5 at the on-line store, expected delivery time is down to 3-5 weeks. earlier this month is stood firmly at 4-6 weeks.

    Moron analysts...

-um, Apple SAID supplies would be constrained through till next quarter ( so what are they talking about???)

"Apple had previously stated that it expected to have shortages of its 1.8 GHz and 2.0 GHz processors through July, with supply catching up in August.

-everyone here knows Liquid cooled 2.5GHz G5's are shipping.....seen photos and all, right?

We now believe that IBM may be having difficulty meeting its revised supply commitments." Prudential maintained its "neutral weight" rating and $27 target price, noting that the constraints may lead to further delays for the G5 iMac and possible delays for PowerMac G5 shipments.

Speaks for itself: It's Neutral ( don't own it, don't want to ) and maintain a price target of $27 - ( stock talk for "Price we hope it will reach as it goes up in the future )
Since they expect Apple to go UP to $27, and it's now above $30 - they are not up-to-date

    Don't sweat it.....

Apple release their OS X on x86 now? Why bother when MS is shipping Windows on PPC G5's in X Box 2, emulating X box 1 games in Virtual PC -the industry will all follow???
