Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.5 via Software Update

Mac OS X 10.3.5 available

Apple today released , a free update to its desktop operating system. Apple says the 23MB update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and is recommended for all users. It offers improved support for NTFS formatted volumes; better reliability for user logins and mounting of home directories in a networked environment; updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers; improved Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard/Mouse and Bluetooth phones; additional FireWire and USB device compatibility; improved font management; updated Mail and Image Capture applications; and better compatibility for third-party applications as well incorporates previous standalone security updates.

Strange

The link referenced in the Software Update description (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25791) doesn't work... I was able to load it once and then not again. And Apple's support pages make NO reference to 10.3.5 (at least not yet.)

No, it's not "strange" at all. It was released less than 20 minutes ago, and all the documentation and things are still propgating around, and bits of the release (e.g. the standalone downloads) are still being rolled out. Calm down. Things don't happen instantaneously. There's nothing strange about it. "Apple's support pages make NO reference to 10.3.5". So what? They will. Just be patient. Cripes.

Halo fix?

I'll find out later tonight, but does anyone know if these new graphic driver updates fix the Halo bug that Apple broke when they released the last OS update??? For about a week I was stoked on the way Halo looked. Then I updated OS X and that killed my buzz...

But in all seriousness, the new video drivers are nice on my 1.33 PB 12. If anything, the cube rotate animation, when used with Desktop Manager, is smooth as a baby's behind now.

What's the build number in About This Mac, please? (Click the 10.3.5 number to cycle to the Build Num.)

I have the Developer 7m32 version downloaded. Just wondering if I can install that--basically I'm too leary of non-combo updaters to do them anymore.

Kernel Panic

12" PB 1 GHz, 768 MB RAM, 40 GB HD - updated from 10.3.4 to 10.3.5. Got a Kernel Panic "Memory Exception Error".

Took out the 512 RAM. Rebooted. Worked for 5 mintues. Same Kernel Panic... I had Mail, iChat and Safari open...

Trying to fix it now... :(

Safari update, java fun

I read on spymac that 10.3.4 had Safari 1.2.2 (v125.8) and now we have 1.2.3 (v125.9). I am assuming tht's why I am having some new java $%%#-ups. On the macnn news page where the alien commercial is on the right check and see if your cursor disappears in the scroll bar to the right of it. If you move the cursor in from the desktop you can get about 1/4 of the way on to it before the cursor goes. Apparently a boundary problem for active java or flash ads that grab the cursor on rollover. Makes it kinda hard to scroll with the arrows when there is an ad next to them. Hee hee, what jokers, they are just kidding around because they are going to get the java and CSS c*** right in 10.4� aren't they?! Please tell me that they are� please�

There's a little add on to Safari that should fix all the problems you've been having with Java and Flash ads. It's called Pith Helmet. You can find it on Version Tracker.

BT problems?

I was wondering if anyone else was having problems with their Bluetooth phones? Bt did not work until I did a full shutdown (not just a reboot). Then, I re-paired my SonyEricsson K700i only to find that the ability to use iSync is now gone... disabled.

Now I need to go back to 10.3.4 :-(

Silky smooth update... well, except for one hiccup, when the download (56K dialup) stopped at precisely midnight. But it resumed -- right where it left off -- after I reselected "Download Only" (as is my custom).

My guess is that they both are. Versiontracker points to the downloadable installer, while software update just needs the update files. Who knows what kind of fluff apple includes on the full updater (SoftwareUpdate told me 22.5M, I thought, though can't swear to it now).

But my Quicksilver 933 feels snappier too. System Prefs now opens in one bounce. Never happenned before.

2 update downloads?

This morning my Mac alerted me to two downloads waiting. Both are labeled "Mac OS X Update" and are version 10.3.5 but they're of different sizes. One is 43.0 MB while the other is 22.9 MB. Very weird. Any clue why this happened?

ps. A third update "Security Update 2004-08-09" eventually appeared as well with a size of 5.3 MB.

Odd Font Issue

After updating to 10.3.5, I noticed that display fonts seemed different. I first noticed it with SETI@Home. I run this in the background in the terminal using SETi Dockling. The readout in SETI Dockling looked different.

My wife then fired up Internet Explorer and asked me what changes I made. She said the text in IE looked different, more like the text displayed by Safari. And they did! In terms of font style, size and clarity, IE looked as good as Safari.

Next, I pulled up Mail. The default headers looked different. Again, I could not tell if this was a different font, or if the ligature and kerning had been changed.

Now comes Safari. First page I pull up and the fonts are obscenely small. I use the text size buttons to make the fonts larger. Odd, only the body copy is getting bigger, not headlines. Hmmm... So I open up preferences and twiddle with the fonts until I get something that looks good. OK. Onto the next page. MONSTER SIZED FONTS!! Use the text size buttons to reduce the fonts, but hey, I'm already at the smallest size level! OK, open up preferences, twiddle with fonts, and I get the page to look OK. Next, page... A combo of micro and MONSTER fonts!

Despite emptying the cache and resetting Safari, I find I have to twiddle with the font setting on each and every page I visit. Now what is up with that?

10.3.5 Crashed Pismo 500

Sorry to rain on folks parade but updating my PB pismo 500 to 10.3.5 from 10.3.4 caused safari/software update/disk utility to stop functioning. Logging in as a user (setup with no additional programs/files etc0 resulted in finder crash-restart cycling with no desktop. Repairing file permissions did not cure the problem. Starting the process of rebuilding to 10.3.4- ugggh!

I had no issues here on a 1.5GHz PB with 1GB RAM... Likewise for some older Ti PBs (7 in all) here at work and a DP G5 2.0GHz tower (oh, and a B&W G4 533Mhz with 640MB RAM)--- No problems at all so far-

No probs, check your HD

Both my Quicksilver 867 and Al PB 1GHz took it fine...

but did anyone else check their hard drive capacity afterward? I know it said something about improving the file system-something-or-rather, but it actually gave me close to an extra GB free space on my 60GB disk! Same thing on my PB. That's a bonus if I ever saw one.

problems?

anyone having issues with programs starting up, or other problems should get and install the Combo Updater. If you can't run Safari or IE, then download it to another computer. Copy over, and run combo updater.
