A MacNN Reader reports that his new 20GB iPod order, originally scheduled to ship July 21, has been delayed until July 26 for unknown reasons.

    40GB 4GEN Order

I ordered a 40GB 4GEN iPod and it shipped on the 21st as promised. It is in route for Monday delivery. I hope they did not find problems and halted orders. I would hate to get a bum unit delivered.

    better batteries

I wonder if apple upped the ram in these new units to prolong battery life. Seems like a quick, cheap way to to it without adding bulk.

    Re: bettery batteries

I don't think the RAM in the iPods changed, the specs on Apple's website still lists the same amount of "skip protection" as before. I suspect they may have underclocked the processor to save power, maybe got a more efficient backlight & LCD, maybe slowed the hard drive down so it doesn't spin as fast (thus, saving power).

    Battery savings

My understanding is that the new iPod's extended battery life comes largely from software optimizations. I imagine there are a number of ways to do this...

Remember that any hard drive spinning burns a lot of battery. For instance, if it notices that you are skipping through tracks, it could only load tracks as they start to play, until a track lasts for 20 seconds, then filling the rest of the buffer.

I suspect that a CPU power-saving mode, more efficient backlight, and a few other hardware-based efficiency methods are also used, of course. Given the similarity of design, I suspect the R&D on this mostly went into battery life, followed by the click wheel and the new industrial design.

    20 vs. 40 GB units

Local CompUSA had several new 40 GB units, but no 20 GB units had arrived. There were out of stock of older units, and have stopped taking names for the iPod mini wait list - how screwed up is that!?!

    e' arrivato!

well my new 40 gig iPod has arrived here in Milwaukee; as has that of a friend of mine. so it would seem that there isn't any widespread problem with delayed shipments.

actually, it came direct from Shanghai, PRC, and according to the original estimate given by FedEx's tracking page, it wouldn't arrive until Monday; but FedEx really came through, and it got here TWO BUSINESS DAYS earlier than they said. Total travel time from pick-up in Shanghai until delivery in Milwaukee, via Anchorage and Indianapolis:

    25.5 hours.

i just hope there isn't a problem with the units that's causing the delay; if so, mine might have slipped through, as it went into order processing early Tuesday, undoubtedly one of the earliest to do so; hopefully being quick on the trigger won't cost me on this one...
