OD2 expands music catalog
The European online music service OD2 said it will that will allow its Euro iTunes music service to sell their tracks, which should increase the number of available songs, but still would leave iTunes far short of the projected 1.3 million song number touted by OD2.
The OD2 service offers its digital music downloads in Windows Media 9 format and thus is not Mac-compatible. OD2 also recently lowered its pricing, offered a a new "pay-as-you-go" model, and introduced own jukebox software (as a plug-in for Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9).
Earlier this year, the UK-based digital music distributor OD2 sold one million downloads through its European retail partners during the first three months of 2004;in contrast, Apple said it sold 800,000 songs during the first week of its Euro iTunes operation, nearly nearly doubling that number in its second week of operation.
OD2 is a Europe-only service which licenses its technology to other sites including Mycokemusic, HMV, Virgin and MTV.
