OD2 to add 1 million songs to pass iTunes, Napster

updated 07:10 am EDT, Fri July 16, 2004

OD2 expands music catalog

The European online music service OD2 said it will that will allow its Euro iTunes music service to sell their tracks, which should increase the number of available songs, but still would leave iTunes far short of the projected 1.3 million song number touted by OD2.

The OD2 service offers its digital music downloads in Windows Media 9 format and thus is not Mac-compatible. OD2 also recently lowered its pricing, offered a a new "pay-as-you-go" model, and introduced own jukebox software (as a plug-in for Microsoft's Windows Media Player 9).

Earlier this year, the UK-based digital music distributor OD2 sold one million downloads through its European retail partners during the first three months of 2004;in contrast, Apple said it sold 800,000 songs during the first week of its Euro iTunes operation, nearly nearly doubling that number in its second week of operation.

OD2 is a Europe-only service which licenses its technology to other sites including Mycokemusic, HMV, Virgin and MTV.

    And also

iTunes will likely have over 1 million "later this year" also. And while OD2 are at it, why not grab more headlines and announce they'll have over 2 million by the end of 2006.

    Report them...

...to the british advertising authorities too.

After all, the 1 million figure can't be just in England.

Actually, the total of 1.5 million was a combined total that covered both weeks, not just the second week.

    Whoo hoo!

    OD2 -- Now With 10,000 ABBA Remixes!

I mean, swell, they'll have 1.3 million tracks, but of what? The article/sites seem mainly concerned about quantity and stock growth.
