Great

Great news. I wasn't counting on the new iMac getting a G5 so soon.

And the 80,000 AirPort Express pre-orders isn't bad either. Too bad it doesn't have a modem... that would make it the perfect travel companion.

Yesterday Macnn reported that Apple reported revenue of $2.014 billion, now all of a sudden it's $1.966 billion. Which one is it.

Apple made 3.1% profit on $2 billion. I think a 6 month certificate of deposit would have yielded a better profit.

I agree. They should just quit making computer altogether and buy a shitload of bonds, since they're all clearly just in it for the highest quarterly yields they can get. Goodbye Apple Computers, hello Apple Bonds Holding Corporation.

Headline misleading...

They said the next iMac will be a G5. This is hardly and announcement. There are no other details. It merely hardens (or kills) the rumors of the next iMac being a G5 (or G4).

Yay! The only questions are what will it look like and how fast will it be.

I'm guessing 1.4 or 1.5GHz. Not faster than the G4 PB.

I can't wait for you nerds to quit riding MacNN for not posting the exact news blurbs you want. There's always a misplaced word, a spelling error, an erroneous capitalization, an update, or in this case, a headline that doesn't tell the entire story in 5 words or less.

Beyond that, it is an announcement the next iMac will be a G5. The amount of specific information given doesn't disqualify it from being an announcement in that we were told something we didn't know before. What if they told us it would be a 1.5 GHz G5, but gave no bus speed info? Would that still not be an announcement because of insufficient information to meet your apparently arbitrary threshold.

If you've got deals that are returning over 12% a year then you should seriously put your money into it - the 3% being cited is just for a quarter.

one year of profits = $244 Million ($61M/fiscal quarter X 4)

Hey look, grasshopper, Apple *still* makes 3.1% for the year.

Now I suppose you're gonna tell me that Dell stock sells for less per share than Apple - so Apple is worth more than Dell. More of that "new math", I reckon.

Investments vs. Business

Okay dorks.... Apple generated $2B in revenue by "being in the business of making and selling stuff". They didn't just get handed the $2B -- so when should they have put it in a CD or bonds? They do have $5B in cash that is certainly invested in various ways, some more liquid and some more strategic.

But the $2B is an upswing in revenue and was generated by doing what Apple has been doing for decades, and will be doing for decades more -- making stuff that people want to buy. Sometimes that will generate a loss! Sometimes extreme profits. Any profit, while introducing so many industry-leading products is a "good thing".

You financial wizards need to go open up an eTrade account or something -- just start it with the $2 billion you have laying around!

I agree with mostly what you have said, rtbarry, and I am definitely against the "new math".

Nevertheless, I dsagree with your statement that any profit is a good thing.

How about making $1 profit when everybody else is making $10? How about making $10 dollars but have to take away $2 to expensing the stock and various charges? I am thinking Apple will make some acqusitions in the near-future to broaden its portfoilo. What if it pays too much for goodwill?

It is always better to make money than not, but just being profitable is actually pretty meaningless.

Remember, the PBG4 came out a year before a G4 iMac, so it seems wierd they'd have a fanless G5 iMac without a G5 PowerBook

More room to cool

It's all about the form factor. Remember, we have the cheapest Mac (the eMac) that's just a touch slower than the PowerBook G4 chip. An iMac can move to the G5 sooner than the PowerBook because there's more room to move air around and cool it. It may seem a bit weird to move the iMac up before the Powerbook, but Powerbooks are still selling well while the iMacs have been really dragging. Nobody is going to choose to buy an iMac instead of a Powerbook, but they will choose to buy a P4 PC instead of the iMac because the chip is too slow. Heck, I love the current iMac form factor, but the truth is I've been sitting on my money for almost a year knowing that the change would be coming "sometime soon." I have no interest in purchasing a system designed around a chip at the end of it's life cycle. (I did that with an LCII!)

Relax people

First, a business class would really help several of you.

Second, 3.1% is not a huge margin but it is not a terrible one either. Dell has been around 6.3% but all they do is assemble other people's bits. Hp was around 4.4% this spring. Many companies do not make 10%, Walmart cleared 3.5% last quarter.

For a company the size of Apple, in the market Apple is in, 3.1% is a reasonable number.

... there have been some world-class stupid questions in this thread. Luckily, I have the answers for ya.

1. The G5 iMac will not be headless.
2. The G5 iMac will be LUCKY if it only has ONE fan.
3. YES, the G5 iMac will have a different design.

How can I be so sure?

1. Consumer computers = AIO, at least at Apple.
2. NINE fans in the current G5. This chip may be a bit different than what's in there, but it won't be THAT different.
3. See above, it would be PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to put a G5 chip in the current iMac design and not have it burn out within ten minutes.

Well I can't speak for 'klinux'... but I imagine what he/she means is the "math" of just assuming that companies would be better off stopping what they do as their core business and just invest some cash, instead of turning a profit making products, might be some flawed math. At some point, somebody has to be generating some value/products/services to create more cash to invest. Apple has done this by turning profits consistently, paying off ALL debt and now sits on $5B, debt-free. Not sure what model they should aspire to -- maybe you geniuses could fill them in.

In the end, sustainable business is not about just maximizing profits for every quarter. It is about building an product/service catalog that the market will continue to believe in over time -- not just using the word "innovative" at industry conferences. And for some companies, it is about real innovation that leads to vanguard products like the graphical UI-based PC (Mac) and the iPod.

Sure, Microsoft/Dell, etc are huge right now. But if size was all that mattered, the USSR had the US beat long ago. We should have just closed up shop back in the 70s.

The example I was commenting on compared Apple's profits to the return on deposit accounts or bonds, where the return is APR (essentially). You couldn't find an account or bond anywhere that paid 3% in a quarter - that was my point.

And 3% in a quarter was what happened. In the next quarter they could make another 3% and so on. While that doesn't add up to 12%, it still really is 3% in a quarter.

So there's nothing wrong with my maths.
