RIAA awards downloads

The Recording Industry Association of America has announced that digital downloads will soon be eligible for Gold and Platinum awards based on sales, reports. Singles that sell more than 100,000 copies will receive Gold recognition, while Platinum is reached at 200,000. Multiplatinum starts at 400,000 and increases in 200,000 increments. CDs, in contrast, must achieve sales of 500,000 units for Gold and 1,000,000 units for Platinum. An event scheduled for late August will mark the official launch of the digital download awards program.

    Why the difference?

I wonder why the RIAA doesn't just lump the two sums together, and keep the old system of recognition. I wonder if the artists will get the wall plaques the same way with digital sales.

    stoopid

Sales are sales, doesn't matter if they are digital or not.

    No reason to segregate them.

Unless that is what they mean and they aren't being clear....

    This is a good thing

This is a great thing, I am not sure why people always find something to complain about. This will mean better publicity for digital downloads. It will mean that artists that do well online, and never release a physical album, can still be recognized. It's one of the most forward-thinking moves I have seen from the RIAA.

    should be the same

the numbers should be the same. 200,000 copies is seriously nothing. its not even half of a gold record. this is seriously going to skew the perception of platinum sales and eventually the RIAA will be giving out gold records like candy.

    Singles vs. Albums

Usually Gold/Platinum refers to LP/Album sales, not singles. It makes sense that there is a different threshold for singles.

    RIAA??

Funny how RIAA keeps saying downloading music is bad, yet they can't ignore the fact that online music sales are the future, or that they are legitimate music sales.

If they get the price increase they were making noises about a while back, they are liable to see online sales drop off just like their CD/tape sales (well the high price plus the music industry is putting out a helluva lot of crappy music).

    Who Cares?

The RIAA is an old dinosaur that needs to just go away. Frankly I could care less if these boneheads give a shale plaque for 8 downloads. The fact they are even talking about digital downloads is just laughable. Do they even know what they are? If your an independent musician all you should care about is your fans and your music and shouldn't care at all about some b.s. recognition from the RIAA, unless your a total hippocrite.

    RIAA Copying

I've asked this question several times since I first saw this story on Reuter's...Isn't the RIAA simply copying the original idea from the DEMO website (www.d-e-m-o.com)? It's had this since 2002 according to Alexa.
