Apple drops 6 percent on iMac shortage

updated 09:45 am EDT, Fri July 2, 2004

Apple falls 6 percent

Shares of Apple opened trading Friday down $1.85, or almost 6 percent, at $30.50 after the company said yesterday that and that a new iMac model wasn't due until September. While the news won't affect Apple's third quarter, which ends Wednesday, the missing iMac could hamper the company's fourth quarter, which ends in mid-September.

    Stupidest Mistake

Someone should be fired for this debacle! This shows a serious lack of planning. No new iMac before the Ed season is over. Apple will lose 100's to Windows because of this.

    Education Market

The iMac isn't a major player in the education market anymore so this isn't that big of a loss. The iBook and eMac are what drive education sales these days. Besides, for what an iMac used to cost, a student can get a PowerBook anyway.

    This should make...

This should make the online stores and any Mom and Pop that has one or two sitting on the shelf pretty happy.

There doesn't yet seem to be a shortage of them at PCMall and the others yet.

    re:Stupidest Mistake

You are right, it's the stupidest mistake. It's a lot worst than being stuck at the same MHz for a year. Maybe someone got confused and thought 'if the iPod mini shortage fuel demand even more, why not try the same thing with the iMac?' I bet you this isn't the end of the trend.

    Inside information

Remember that analyst that said he'd buy if AAPL got back down to 30? Time to move on that offer, son!

    Apple just f*cked itself

...for the next 3 months. I'm sure Steve is making some heads roll.

    YES !

Glad I sold my stock one day before WWDC.
    $ 33.40

I knew it was going down.
    Once it's at $ 28 or so, I get back in !

    getting back in

I cashed out when AAPL was bumping around $25... I'm sorely tempted to get back in if it gets back down to 28 myself.

    Speed upgrade

They were probably expecting a speed increase that never happened. Too much over-reaction - this isn't the first time and won't be the last - I bet it has almost no impact in the long run.
