    Thanks to iTunes

And iTunes for Windows. Now why wasn't this mentioned? It's just one of the many trojan house that Apple is sneaking in to get by Microsoft's blind spot :)

    To bad there isn't hardl

To bad there is so little Quicktime Content on the Web. Everywhere I go it seems the content is WMV or Real. I know there is some, but it isn't nearly as much as the other fomats. I wish Apple would work on this. I do like Quicktime so much better.

    Correct numbers

I am sure it was downloaded that many times, but I know I have done it at least 40-60 times myself in the last 3 months, I work at a school and did it for al of the school's computers. So there might be that many downloads, but not that many people.

    Re: Correct numbers

Yes, but are all of those school's computers used by only you? I'd say not, so you downloaded it 40-60 times for at least 40-60 people.

But so what? The same applies to previous versions, and Real, and WMV. You'll never get completely accurate numbers.

This just means that QuickTime is used more and more. This is a good thing.

The number of people doesn't matter just the number of computers installed on. Those 40-60 computers you installed quicktime on now have the opportunity to use the best software available to them.

That's why they have all these security updates hose your system - so you have to archive and install then re-install QT on your machine!!!

Sorry - I couldn't resist. I'm still smarting from losing hours of work on tues from users who didn't repair their permissions prior to the update....

    correct numbers?

The reason why there is little quicktime content is because there aren't good statistics for browser penetration. For example, macromedia provides very good (independently verified) statistics of the % of web users with flash player installed. Nowhere can I find this kind of information about quicktime, which would make it an easier sell to a client needing an online video solution.

I think the guy above is right on track, though. The major driver of this is iTunes. And just think, a few years ago Microsoft was pushing apple to "knife the baby", kill quicktime developement on windows.

    Mmmkay.

Let's list a few reasons why apple can report this insanely high download figure, shall we?

    1) Many people auto-update their software when the software asks for it. These people aren't downloading Quicktime as new, they already have a verison of quicktime. Doesn't mean they particularly love Version 6 over their current version.

    2) Apple released Quicktime for Windows, which obviously increase the number of potential downloaders. There aren't any good quicktime players for windows other then apple's player, and a lot of content is in quicktime format. So people are downloading because they need a quicktime player, and apple's is the obvious choice.

    3) Quicktime comes bundled with iTunes for Windows. These are people who didn't even WANT quicktime installed, the only reason they have it is because iTunes installed it for them automatically.

Suffice to say, the reason people download Quicktime often has nothing to do with the fact they like the quicktime format, or prefer it over some other format. If content is in quicktime format, then you pretty much HAVE to download quicktime, unless you want to ignore all that content. It's nice that apple can post high numbers and all, but they mean nothing if you don't understand where the numbers are coming from.

    Interesting timing

AirPort Express. AirTunes. New iTunes. New G5s. Now a random QuickTime media release.

Think Apple is maybe ramping up to some kind of new product announcement? Converge all of those concepts and one possible outcome is an iMedia set-top box that does iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD in your living room.

    Just a thought.

I think you are confusing "quicktime format" with "MPG/MPG4 format." Quicktime format is .QT, .mov, or something like that. I forget. Anyway, QuickTime IS the best MPG4 player, so I think that's what you were getting at.
