No 3GHz G5 or PowerBook G5 'anytime' soon

No 3GHz G5, G5 PowerBooks

Apple said that it "anytime soon..certainly not before the end of the year" and noted similar challenges for the iMac. Apple also admitted that it would not meet the 3GHz promise made by Jobs last summer, saying that the challenges moving to 90 nanometer were "much bigger than anyone expected. All-in-all, no we are not getting to 3GHz anytime soon."

    this is BS.

I can't believe this. he PROMISED that apple would have a 3.0 GHz machine within ONE YEAR. It's been a year.

    I want my money back.

    powerbook and the G5

has anyone thought about skipping G5 introduction into a powerbook in favor of using whatever is coming next, perhaps more in line with a smaller form factor?

    Not a year yet

The G5's weren't all shipping until about Sep as I recall. This still gives Jobs many months to have a 3GHz G5 out within a year of the G5's fully shipping.

I still don't think they'll meet that but they might only a be a few months late rather than 6+ months late.

We shouldn't have been gloating when Intel announced it couldn't push clock rates much higher.

    Good!

    1. I'm *really* glad Apple broke with their own policy of not commenting on unreleased products to put these two nonsense items to bed. I've been telling people for MONTHS "no powerbook/iMac G5s in the near future." Now it's official.

    2. Sure, I want Apple to go to 3GHz asap -- but think how someone who just bought a 2.5GHz machine next week (let's say) would feel come September if they put out a 3GHz machine *just* to keep that "end of summer" promise. There's no doubt Apple *could* do this -- they could make ONE 3GHz machine to prove that they can do it by their original deadline -- but would that be right, or fair? No.

I'll hope that they (IBM I mean) get the problem sorted out in time for a nice revision C come Jan. or Feb, when it will matter a lot more to look like we're moving forward (assuming Intel *actually* gets a 4GHz out the door by then, which I doubt they can do).
