Apple store in Austin, TX set to open June 12

Apple store in Austin, TX

Apple's upcoming 4,000-sq foot several days ago, will open June 12, according to the Austin-American Statesman. It will be Apple's third store in Texas and Apple says it may consider a second store in Austin as well: "The Austin store will be the 80th that Apple has opened since beginning its retail venture three years ago. Apple plans to open eight more stores by October and is on target to pass the $1 billion mark in annual sales, analysts say... 'Austin is the size city that we would consider putting in a second store,' [Apple VP Johnson] said. But for now, he is concentrating on the first store's opening, when he and 25 employees will [be] hand out free T-shirts. And then there is that stock of iPod minis."

It will be the fourth store in Texas. Willowbend was the first. Houston Galleria was the second and Knox Street was the third.

    In Yo Face Michael Dell!

It would be great if Apple would put up a very large, in-store display that compares the G5 supercomputer cluster to the slower (and more expensive) one that UT Austin bought from alumnus Dell's firm, then had the UT Board of Regents in for a catered, private pre-opening peek at the store. It wouldn't hurt to give them each an iPod Mini as a remembrance of the evening.

    La Frontera

They should put the second store in La Frontera across from Dell so Mike and his R&D guys won't have so far to drive to copy from Apple. (FYI, PowerComputing used to be in the old Walmart right across the highway from Dell headquarters.)

Apple went to Barton Creek because Nordstrom is there. Lakeline Mall is too far away from downtown and the Arboretum is a shadow of it's former glory. "There's no there there".
