Google's Gmail officially supports Safari web browser

Several readers note that Google's Gmail, the forthcoming email service currently in beta, today added Safari 1.2.1 to its official list of supported browsers, which also include Microsoft IE 5.5, Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.4, and Mozilla Firefox 0.8. Mac browsers such as Camino and Opera are not still not supported, but the company says that "We hope to expand this list in the near future and announce new platforms as they become available. In the meantime, you can install one of the supported browsers from the links above." Update: Readers using Safari 1.2.2 are continuing to have some compatibility issues.

But I just tried and I couldn't log in my account - it kept asking me to enter a word shown in graphics.

My Safari is 1.2.2 (the latest).

Got to try it when I get home. it is annoying having to acknoledge that Safari is not supported whenever I check my Gmail from my Mac at home.

as usual, those who don't want or need to upgrade to 10.3 are left out for NO REASON! I was excited when i saw the "Download safari 1.2" link, but it was again for the newest system only.. is it so hard to make a product work for at least *two* revisions of the same os? and for web developper to actually check for features supported by the user's browser rather than just checking the version? come on..

Jealous? Of an email account? Why? I have email on yahoo, hotmail, earthlink, .mac, my own domain, work, probably a couple of other domains I don't recall. I only use the web-based ones for the stupid sites that I don't want to give a good email for.

If it doesn't work with your mail client, then what's the big deal?

The big deal is that it doesn't NEED to work on your mail client. It's got a GB of space. So you can access all of your mail from anywhere in the world, as long as you've got a net connection. That said, their FAQ says they'll have POP access soon enough.

So it's free, has good (collaborative?) spam filtering, has plenty of space, is universally available, and has innovative features (fast searching, threading, and more.) Oh, and did I mention it's free?

Jealous now? ;-)

The interface to GMail is elegant as all heck. It's fast - a whole helluva lot faster than Hotmail or Yahoo, when it comes to navigating through folders. Keyboard shortcuts galore. Folks are saying it's not just the best webmail, but the best web app out there, period.
