Mac OS X 10.3.4 update

Apple today released .

The Mac OS X Server 10.3.4 update includes:

improved reliability and compatibility of NFS file services and network automounts
enhanced Server Admin and Network Image Utility applications
improved Open Directory scalability and replication reliability, Active Directory integration
additional support for FireWire and USB devices
improved compatibility for third party applications and devices
previous standalone security updates

I'm NOT Guinea Pig!

After the past slew of updates this month and all their associated problems...

ie: Airport 3.4 and 3.4.1, the Securtiy Updates, iTunes 4.5 and QuickTime 6.5.1...

I'm EXTREMELY wary! I guess I'll let everyone ELSE play guinea pig this time around... squeeeeeeeak!

Use Combo Updater

Even though I was on 10.3.3 I always install a combo updater. Install yours from here - http://wsidecar.apple.com/cgi-bin/nph-reg3rdpty1.pl/product=04232&platform=osx&method=sa/MacOSXUpdateCombo10.3.4.dmg

Installled it, and posting this message from there. If seems that Apple worked on the Safari security problem...using some of the testing websites I cannot get anything though. Way to go Apple!

Well the security issues still persisted after the latest security updates (the scripts were still able to run) so I guess there nothing new in that respect....That's a goddam disgrace...Are we just supposed to cross our fingers and hope the best whenever we click a link?! This is an unacceptable situation!!!!!!!!

10.3.4. Update works fine

I just bought the new 12" PowerBook 1.33Ghz w/SuperDrive. 10.3.4 works fine for at least the last 3 hrs or so. No gotchas discovered yet. Won't be able to try on iMac 17" 800 Mhz until I get home. So far so good.

Snappier and Security etc

This update definitely feels way snappier on a dual 1ghz mirror door. Also, I used a file at this link to solve my URL issue for clicking on web links and fearing a complete system destruction via terminal etc.

I have been running fine, using another test machine to go to the test pages that show the URL Apple Help Terminal exploit. I hope this info helps. I found out about it on TechTV's the ScreenSavers.

busted

I just installed the 3.4 update on my dual g4 and it won't start OS X. Booting in verbose mode gives me an error: could not establish the default connection to the WindowServer. Then my screen goes from verbose mode back to blue screen mode on an endless loop. Great!

I installed 3.4

restarted my iMac... The hard drive came on and sounded normal for about 10 seconds. Then the drive started making a horrible scratching sound. A blue screen came up but it was blank. Then the whole machine leapt off of the desk and swallowed my cat. It bounded toward my daughter but she got out the door. The iMac gave chase but fortunately pulled its power plug out of the wall and stopped dead. It's still under warranty! I haven't found anything in the warranty about pets, so I don't know what kind of compensation I can get. Anyone know? I bet Apple will say it was my fault. This really pisses me off. First iTunes and now this! Doesn't Apple test this stuff. It's like they're trying to cause us agony.

Was your cat still under warranty? I think you need to take this up with the manufacturer of the kitty, since Apple's licensing agreement (which you agreed to before installing) clearly indemnifies them in the case of swallowed pets.

USB screwup?

After the upgrade on my dual 1 GHz, the USB ports on the 17" Apple Display stopped working. Anyone else have this happen?

It was a cat, pfff. Is the mac ok? Perhaps you actually started virtual PC. This would explain the satanic actions, but just clean the cat entrails out of the drive run fsck and disk warrior exorcist edition and restart, should work fine.

USB is fine

Backlit keyboard

This happened on our PowerBook on a previous update and was fixed by changing the preferences and re adjusting the illumination by using the keys on the keyboard. check it out.

I will retract my earlier post re backlit kb problem. It just needs to be set again in preferences, and can now be set to go off after a specified period of inactivity.

Poor iBook

I installed it on my Snow iBook (500), and I either get a freeze while starting printing services, starting Apache 2, or the spinning beach ball at the login screen. Starting up in single user mode and running fsck fixed a few problems, but I still can't start up completely...

I hope my iMac doesn't have these problems...it's installing right now... :(

All Ok So far on G4 iBook

No problems so far. System seems more responsive (I think the technical term here is "snappy"), possibly due to defragmenting RAM from the reboot.

Almost a home run�

Love the speed, apps boot faster, scrolling in folders with lot of stuff is smooth and fast. Looking forward to more good stuff EXCEPT it blew out my junk mail prefs both the Default rule and others I made. My inbox is once again full of $^%*&^) and now I have to rebuild my rules and re-teach it. bummer but I hope well worth it, no pain no gain

Had to reboot twice

After install and required reboot, bluetooth, airport and usb ports did not work. after rebooting again everything worked normally and a little more responsive.

PB G4 15.2" 1Ghz

Works for me too

No problems with Airport, safari, firewire, ipod, etc with mine. Forgot to check permissions afterwards (actually, I ran repair permissions, but forgot that I was running it and closed it down).

Still would like a fix for the 18,000 URI problems. Sooner, rather than later would be nice, too.

It really . . . .

Frelled up my system - FW800/1.42DP/2GB RAM. Everything ran great until I let it sleep for the first time, then slowly everything started to disintegrate. After hours, on the phone with AppleCare, they're there on Sundays, nothing external (which all ran great in 10.3.3, better in 10.2.8) I ended up having to wipe my drive and reinstall from scratch.

The main problem was sleep along with overall performance. It wouldn't sleep after it entered a "pre" sleep mode which no one has ever heard of when it would put my monitors to sleep and leave the CPU running with no access to it to wake it, or it would sleep on its own without being set to, and in both cases would lock up after 10 minutes in sleep. The only way to recover was having to crash the machine and restart with the power button.

Apple said that there are "issues" with the update and if you read through the Apple Discussion Forums you'll see more, much more than usual activity on this.

A couple of things that I have found that helped a bit was to strip out MS Office X and reinstall after making sure that it was "completely gone" from everywhere, mostly any "trial versions" and that takes some doing even with their "remove" application, moving all fonts to the user fonts folder, totally pull all Logitech Mouse and the like software (it's only rated to 10.2.6/8 - Logitech is supposedly working on this), and do the primary OS install from 10.3 to 10.3.4 using the one combination updater and skip the other versions. There are a couple of other things that I did, but don't have enough result info to recommend them.

P.S.
The OS Security Hole that 10.3.4 was to fix, as per the European Security Agency that found it, "it ain't fixed".

If I had heeded the few early warnings and waited, I wouldn't be spending Memorial Day Weekend rebuilding my machine. But I knew the minute I pressed the continue button I was Frelled. Didn't realize that recovering in 10.3.x was going to be so severely labor intensive.
