Apple falls short of envrionmental mark

updated 11:15 am EDT, Wed May 19, 2004

SVTC Computer Report Card

Apple ranks seventh among 27 companies in the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition's , which grades the environmental practices and recycling operations of companies in the electronics industry. HP, Dell, and NEC were the only companies to meet the coalition's minimums. Apple's supply chain audits, which ensure that no suppliers are using chemicals Apple has banned, represent the company's high points, but it has no recovery data for recycling and aggressively opposed Maine's producer takeback bill, which requires manufactures to take responsibility for discarded video display devices. IBM, Sony, and Toshiba also ranked higher than Apple.

    Wow

How sad is it that Apple gets such poor marks, yet is still SEVENTH out of 27???

    that ain't right

It is sad. Apple should try harder in this respect, since their customers tend to be fairly left.

    Why should..

a manufacturer have to take responsibility for someone else's property (a display). Shouldn't they take responsibility for it? After all, it's there's, they're in control of it. That's like blaming McDonald's for people throwing burger wrappers away. There are plenty of safe ways to dispose of a CRT. If your county doesn't offer the service directly then tell them they should. That's who should be complained to, not Apple.

    Personal responsibility people. Come on!

    Not right...

It is sad indeed that they should fall short. It's not just these environmental issues but also their involvement in manufacturing plants within oppresive regimes (China, Taiwan) But one could blame every company who has manufacturing plants in China or Taiwan for that...

Yet McDonald's became proactive on this front. They stopped using foam containers long ago because of their lack of disposability. They could've said "Hey, we just sell it, others should figure out how to dispose it better", but they came out going "Let's go for something less likely to be around 200 years from now".

My offtopic to your offtopic - Taiwan is not an oppresive regime.

    You forget that....

People that own Macs and older Apples tend to continue to use them well beyond their "normal" lifespan. With that said most Apple computers never see a trash or get recycled as most, if not all PC's do.
