    Why not follow

the company who opened up the iPod to Windows for Apple. Really simple - license their code.

    Fire up the lawyers

What a ripoff. This looks exactly like iTunes with the song library on the top and the controls on the bottom. Pathetic.

    boo-effin'-hoo

Get over it, you lame hardware makers (dell, etc.) crying the blues about Apple and the "closed" format. For YEARS these companies treated Apple as if it didn't exist, and now THEY want Apple to open up?
Get over it, lames. Should have been on the cutting edge of the digital music revolution, but the best they can come up with is the ultra-wack DELL DJ (or whatever its called) and then b**** about Apple not playing fair.
*heh* It does feel so good to see them squirm so...

    maybe they should...

im starting to think apple should let others develop software to work with the iPod...as well as FairPlay. if they want to stay on top there really wont be any other way. apple itself is a good example. the cream doesnt always rise to the top. if it does...it doesnt stay there by sitting on its butt. gotta keep the fizz going. if they were somewhat selective in who they do business with it should be fine. it would definitely avoid some of this kinda c*** jobs.

    i agree

I think, over the years, this is probably what hurt Apple the most, not working well with others, and being to close-minded. I know they don't want another incident like the one with Microsoft in the 80s, but 24 years later, Apple's still paranoid about being open.

I have little doubt this will marginalize the iPod and Apple in the long run. Good ol' Steve Jobs... hasn't changed that much after all, eh?

    Dame Scribble, true, but

Apple, now that they have an upper hand, needs to find some way of incorporating others into its iPod/iTunes model. I'd hate for the whole Mac vs. Windows thing to play out again. Microsoft might win, again.

    history repeats itself...

And history repeats itself again. Apple is making a BIG mistake by not opening up FairPlay. A BIG mistake. They will eventually lose this battle also.

    They will open...

...but not yet as they don't have too. Its just too much fun watching everybody else squirm and not have a clue and then turn around and blame Apple. I'm having fun at least. What company will whine next? Apple will play when someone else comes to the playground with a shinier ball and that hasn't happen yet.
