Reader: Free iTunes songs?

A MacNN reader notes that some songs at the iTunes Music Store are available as free downloads, despite not being featured as single of the week nor promoted anywhere else. One such example is the Jamie Cullum track . It's unclear how many such free songs exist.

    Not Available

When I try to download it I get a not available message. It says "This item is being modified. Please try again later"

    Not any more

Apple must have read this article. I just tried to download it, and iTunes popped up a message saying "Purchase of this item is not currently available. The item is being modified. Please try again later."

They are probably changing it to a paid song. Bummer...
    Who is Jamie Cullum anyway?

    Item being modified

I get the same message. "This item is being modified." I also tried a search for the word "Free" but only artists, song titles and albums came up, not prices.

I added the free single & this song, but every time I tried to get both at the same time I got something like:

"The contents of your cart has changed, please try again". Each time my cart stayed exactly the same... Then when I tried to buy the All at Sea song by itself, I got the error everybody else is getting...

    duh!

old news. that song was last week's "Discovery of the Week". that why no one can dowload it...
today is tuesday, thus new free music downloads are up (James, by Josh Rouse -- although as of five minutes ago last week's official free song (French Connection, by Simon Stinger) was still free.
Free Discovery of the Week is like an easter egg hunt, there's a free song somewhere -- you just gotta find it (would be a gip though if they just default to last week's free song)

    Jamie Cullum

    "Who is Jamie Cullum anyway?"

Heavily-hyped young crooner type, covers over peoples' songs in a Jazz style for a non-rock audience. Pretty good voice but unbearably bland after the first 5 minutes. Free is about right I reckon.

    Young, over-hyped jazz...

Sounds a lot like (shudder) Diana Krall. No honest vibrancy; no soul; no life. One step up from Muzak.

    Free Last Tuesday

Actually, the Jamie Cullum song was briefly featured as the free song early last Tuesday. You had to be up around 4 AM to see it, but it was right on the iTMS home page. But a few hours later it was replaced by the Stinger song which remained the free song for the rest of the week. I just figured it was a mix-up on Apple's part, posting the wrong free song, and counted myself lucky to have caught it before it was removed.
