Apple to cut more jobs

Apple said that continued reorganization of its sales and marketing efforts will result in an over the course of the current fiscal year, which ends in September, according to a SEC filing. CNET News.com reports that "the cuts are in addition to 200 jobs that were eliminated when the company closed its Sacramento, Calif., plant in April. Apple took a $9.6 million restructuring charge last quarter, and the company said in the filing that it expects to take another $10 million charge in the current quarter, largely related to finalizing the plant closure. The company said the job cuts and the plant closing should save it $6 million per quarter in operating expenses. Shuttering the plant alone should save the company $3 million per quarter..."

    Never good

It can't be good if Apple shuttered a plant. It is never good when shuttering a plant.

    hmmm...

i was going to post a different thought, but i think i understand what apple's doing... essentially, they adopting a model similar to microsoft's, where you hoard as much cash as possible, and then buy smaller burgeoning technologies and their developers (see: anything related to audio/video over the past two years as examples). but at least apple seems to have a clue as to how to USE the techs they buy.

    Sales

The article, as I read it, seems to say that most of the jobs are marketing and sales. Are these to be offset by store positions? Is there really a net cut in costs? Marketing and sales are,...er...important.

    important?

    "Marketing and sales are,...er...important."

In any other company, they would be. But given Apple's lame advertising, this doesn't surprise me a bit.

    where...

do you see those Dell Ads? off-peak times, cable. Not prime spots. Who's buying off of those ads? People who are clueless about computers. They're ads are essentially direct marketing. people buying computers off of TV ads are essentialy the same people buying the best of Tony Randal, and the Hoverround.

Where do you see Apple's ads? Where people who buy apple products are. Friends durring. MTV. CNN. Networks and shows that are where you'll find those who are interested. Apple's ads, aisde from announcing new products, often are image advertising. Selling the apple brand rather then a single product.

Apple's method is long-term more successful. Dell's is just shoving computers out the door.

    advising Kerry on jobs?

Yeah, just the person you want to have advising Kerry on jobs. Someone (Jobs) who manufactures most of their stuff overseas and who is cutting more and more workers.
