TIME: Mac Office 2004 may make Windows users envious

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Mon May 3, 2004

Mac Office 2004 superior

Noting it could make Windows users envious, TIME says that "Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac is for most users. Last fall Microsoft put out a bloated update of Office for Windows that focused more on collaborating with other users than on making it easier for you to get your own work done. The streamlined Office for Mac puts individuals first.

    hmm

except for the fact that Entourage is not a true MAPI Exchange client- and that it completely blows in environments using Networked Home Folders. In comparison to Outlook on a PC, that is.

    Problems with 2004

MS puts nice things into Office for Mac, but it makes the documents incompatible with PC if you use those functions.

It still has shortfalls where Mail and Database is concerned. Sure we can use Entourage (if our company pays mucho bucks to them to upgrade all the exchange servers) and we'll never get access (and that may be a good thing because I really like FileMaker Pro)

    Of course ...

... it's superior. We're Mac users, we're more discriminating and we hold Microsoft to a higher standard (and the Mac team delivers, it has to be said). MS knows perfectly well that Mac users, unlike PC users, can choose NOT to run MS Office and get along perfectly fine. This means they actually have to WORK for our money.

ISTR that Office 98, 2001 and Office v.X all got similarly glowing reviews from PC mags at the time because they were (in general) better than the PC versions of the day. Again, this is a perfect object lesson on why Competition Is Good and why MS actually performs better when they are in a situation where they must actually COMPETE. Too bad the IT managers of the world don't care about GOOD.

    surprised?

is this a surprise? the last few versions of Office have all been (for the most part) better on the mac. MacBU is the only part of Microsoft that seems to "get it" in the idea of what a program should look and act like.

Really? Name me something so special about Mac users that a PC users do not have that FORCES PC user to run MS Office? There are plenty of alternatives like Corel, OOo, and StarOffice for PC world as well. Whether they are adapted or not is a whole other argument but thinking just because you are a Mac user therefore you are God's gift to the word is another thing.

    Flame away! :)

I've read that sentence a few times over and I'm still at a loss. Are you sure you wrote it in english?
