h.264 HD video codec

Apple is previewing a or MPEG-4 Part 10, at its booth at NAB: "unlike other codecs, h.264 is scalable, allowing content creators to write their content for everything from 3G phones to HD and everything in between. Frank Casanova, Apple's director of QuickTime product marketing, told the website: 'This is a very flexible and very high-quality codec. It's based on a whole new engineering base - it's not today's MPEG-4 tweaked,' before adding, 'We are working on it, as are many other companies - here there are dozens of announcements and demonstrations of h.264. Everywhere except in the Microsoft booth.'"

    Meyowwwrrr is right!

There is going to be some serious meyow meyow and clawing action. I love it when Microsoft gets a nice slash taken at it's soft underbelly... Hard to find when you are a big ole whale.

    Umm

There is a reason that MS isn't behind h.264. It already has a flexible scalable codec. It's called Windows Media 9. They were digitally projecting movies encoded in it at the last Sundance. And honestly, they looked fantastic.

This is one of those rare moments where Microsoft is ahead of the curve.

    M$ leapfrog QT

Apple let QT fall behind and WM9 has leapfrogged QT.

I hate it when M$ does something better than Apple.

I can tollerate M$ coping Apple, but beating Apple is depressing.

It's a lot easier to leapfrog someone if you're standing on their shoulders to begin with.

    Yes it is

WMV 9 is currently the best high-lossy codec on the market set as a standard that is available to the public. The recently released Real Video 10 is nearly the same in quality, and can even produce slightly better results at slightly lower bitrates. But, its adoption hasn't taken off like WMV9 did. QT's current H.263 based MPEG-4 video is comparably a joke. Apple dropped the ball bigtime by releasing and settling for the current implementation. Maybe H.264 will be the saving grace and bring QT back to par with the rivals, but M$ does have a full year jump.
