Australia government agency deploys 1200 iMacs

updated 11:30 am EDT, Wed April 14, 2004

Australia goes Mac OS

Australia's NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) will across 140 registry offices, according to Computerworld: "the G4s will be used as point-of-sale terminals for its counter staff to handle RTA customers transactions across 'prepared business applications' as well as for 'collecting data and payments and issuing licences, registration certificates and receipts for various transactions'. The move away from Wintel desktops also appears to reiterate the recent strong stand by the NSW government to seek alternatives to wholly proprietary operating system kernels - and the licensing models that go with them - where cost-effective and viable alternatives exist."

    It further states...

... that the staff will be forced to speak in loud voices in order to be heard over the din of the G4's cooling fans.

... which is a welcome relief from the ear-splitting screaming they were previously accustomed to when using their Windows-based PCs.

    Um yeah....

Except that the iMac G4's are whisper quiet (at least mine was).

Nice to see a public move away from the Wintel platform based on the restrictive licensing requirements.

    "deploys"

Sounds like the iMacs will march themselves into the offices like an invading army.

Also: my iMac G4 literally doesn't make a sound. Don't know what that other guy was on about. Oh yeah, he doesn't have on and was talking out of his a**. Imagine that from a PC troll!

    Actually they're iMacs

so they're near silent. They were using Sun Java stations and the biggest contender against Apple was Dell using Linux. The key decision makers were Apple users at home and to make sure everyone else knew how good Mac's were, the RTA issued several iBooks for people to take home. I don't know if they were "gifts" from Apple or not.

Having Unix underpinnings was what they were looking for but being able to run terminal commands and Word on the one system without switching OS's or running complex emulation environments was for big winner for Apple. Having an open source kernel that the RTA could customise if necessary was also a big psycological winner although I don't think they have any plans to do that.

All in all this is a huge coup for Apple Aus and I hope it is the first of many such conversions.

    :)

I know they're iMacs. It was just too good a line to not use, even if it's NOT accurate.
