iPod mini delays extend, free iPod upgrade offered

updated 12:45 pm EDT, Tue April 13, 2004

Continued mini delays

Apple has reportedly informed buyers with iPod minis on back-order at the Apple Store that their orders are not expected to arrive for another three weeks, notes. On account of the extended delays, Apple is offering customers who have already been waiting for a considerable time the option of replacing their order with a 15GB iPod model at no additional charge. "We apologize for any inconvenience. Your business is very important. If you would like an iPod sooner, we are offering to replace your iPod mini with a 15GB iPod at no additional charge. This model usually ships within 24 hours," an email from Apple says. Meanwhile, reseller sources inform MacNN that no iPod minis have shipped to the channel in the last two weeks. Apple continues to cite "incredible demand" for the delays.

    Cool!

Take it! Who'd want the mini, anyway, when you can get 4 times the storage for $50 more, and now you can get it for the same price!!!

    Great both ways

I think this is a very good thing that Apple is doing. I myself would most likely take the free upgrade, but am also torn because although the iPod Mini is not at cheap as we would like, has a limited amount of storage versus the 15gig iPod,... it is still freaking cool and a perfect example of why Apple is Apple. It it meant for those who want to be seen with a geek toy with a new flavor of style and design, while still bearing resemblence to the still cool iPod.

If I had the mini, I would just fine tune my playlists so that I could swap one big one or many off and others on frequently with the fast Firewire connection. So if you can not store 4x the amount in songs... as a 15gig, the firewire connectivity and fast transfer speed will allow you to just swap out playlists. Now when the rumor of a price drop to 200 or maybe less later on... watch out.

    Size matters, I'll wait

The ipod mini is 35% lighter and 40% smaller by volume. For a road warrior, every ounce and every cubic inch matters. My whole music collection is on my PBG4. It just takes a few minutes extra to manage and swap playlists.

    Slick mini!

    That's a nice gesture on Apple's part.

I had my doubts about the mini, but after playing with my girlfriend's, I'd say it's just about perfect. Yes, it lacks the capacity of the maxi Pod (that sounds a little nasty), but in this case size does matter.

I guess she thought it was pretty darn perfect, too, because she went out and bought a new iBook (and dumped her old Dell box)!

Yes, an iPod CAN a switcher make!

    Much improved...

...customer service from Apple? Who knew?

Next thing you know, they'll admit they KNEW about the iBook failing logic board, ask for forgiveness, and offer every affected customer (not just those in a certain pretend range) a free logicboard fix with an extended free warrantee or a heavy discount on a G4 iBook upgrade.

    not that outrageous

remember the G4 systems that were supposed to get the high end vid card (at the time), but Apple had problems getting the vid card in mass quantities, and Apple offered to ship them with a GeForce4mx and ship them the vid cards later? This tactic is similar to that.

    No mini for meme

So, it seems Europe can kiss the Mini goodbye... Too bad, I knew this would happen. By the time it gets here, they are well into their rev 2 and worst, by then we have lost interest as the hype is ALL OVER...

    It'sEVERYONE'S deal

You don't have to have an iPod mini on backorder to take advantage of this deal. Apple is selling the 15 gig iPod online for $249. Mine is scheduled to be delivered Friday!

    Oops! Mybad...

It's the 10 gig iPod on sale for $249, not the 15 gig. Still a good deal... :)
