    Damn...

    ... I had just saved up enough money to buy that new $300 Gateway. Awwww shucks.

    Gateway, just give it up. Go away.

    Damn!

    This blows! I'm going to be going to the store each day from now until they close it down. I'm going to miss it and all of its wonderful barnyard feel. Apple should learn something from Gateway about making quality stores that people want to attend. When was the last time you saw people LINING UP outside an Apple store waiting for it to open...

    You have a weird way with sarcasm...Also, what other stores are synonymous with people camping out overnight to get into them the next morning?

    Long Lines!

    I've seen long lines outside of Gateway stores waiting for them to open: every December 26th when people need to return the junk they were given the day before.

    Funny...

    Where are all the headlines saying Gateway is going under? If Apple were to close just one store, there would be articles all over the web saying it's over for Apple.

    Funny how that works, eh?

    Apple Stores...

    What do you think this means for Apple Stores? Are they considered successful from a profit standpoint? Has there been any research linking their openings with increased sales of Macs? If no to both, this could be ominous for the Apple Stores' futures.

    Spam

    Up to 7 years in prison sounds harsh for spam. A lifetime of (monetary) debt should be enough. However, identity theft and forgery is real serious. Surprise no one here has spoken up about it.

    spam == identity theft

    If forging the From: header of e-mail can be counted as identity theft, that opens up alot. Many folks say "free speech", and, indeed, perhaps we should be able to call anyone in the phone book, or e-mail anyone with a publically posted e-mail address... Public is public. But you aren't supposed to call after a certain time, and you could probably sue me if I was calling people up to sell them stuff and claiming I was someone else ;-) Interesting spin.

    As to Gateway ... originally you could not actually buy anything from their stores; later they added "some" configurations. Everything else was just a show room (like the old catalog stores?) where you ordered, paid, and had it shipped. While I love the idea of "seeing in person" first (manyoften use stores to check stuff out then go order it online), it's a rather expensive way to approach "try before you buy". One should have expected this when they originally opened a store that would take money, but not let you leave with any product ;-)
