Tech: Judge on swapping; Gates on future decade; ...

Evening tech news: A judge in Canada says making copyrighted music available on a computer network is not a crime; hardware costs will fall sharply within a decade to the point where widespread computing with speech and handwriting won't be limited by expensive technology, Bill Gates said; America Online, plagued by subscriber losses and American job cuts, is following the lead of other large companies by opening a new software center in India.

some kinda legislation needs to be taken to stop all computing jobs from being exported oversees (i.e. India). I'm glad I made the decision a few years ago to get out of software writing.

The only tool in these parts is you, asshole. This judge has recognized that this really is all about corporate profits, and has nothing to do with the well-being of the artists or the consumers. He is encouraging debate; morons like you try to stifle it.

Do us all a favor, idiot. Fuck off.

...to be able to download AIFF versions (for personal use) of albums (yes vinyl!) that I paid full retail for & still own or promise to destroy if required - assuming that wouldn't break any laws - might illustrate a logical 'fair use'...?

Moving to India

Well, if all the high paying tech jobs move to India, who is going to pay the high price of tech? By eliminating the jobs of your customers, you will eliminate your customers. Also, does anyone think that there is another market in the world that would pay the price that Americans pay for technology or the amount of technology they pay for? It appears that AOL and the like will eventually loose all their well paying customers to the Indians that have the jobs but will only pay pennies to purchase the products.

Totally. Note that "making copyrighted music available on a computer network" is one of the features of iTunes 4.0... Apple crippled it with version 4.0.1 to restrict it to LANs, but only as an emergency measure after a hack was release enabling copying of the music.

I agree with sosumi, SB is a moron and should definitely fuck off.

So why don't people boycott AOL? How much money did these douchebags piss away on useless CD mailers? That would be enough to pay all their people for the next frickin century.
Keep in mind, those jobs are not going to India so that AOL can continue to perform well. They're going to India so that AOL can continue to perform well DESPITE OUTLANDISH SENIOR EXEC COMPENSATION.

VOTE BUSH OUT.
