Sony-McDonald\'s pact

Sony has landed a to promote its forthcoming download service, after Sony's last-minute pitch cut Apple out of the picture: "One person familiar with the McDonald's deal said the fast-food company would probably give away more than 100 million Sony Connect songs in the U.S. McDonald's had been in talks to launch a similar marketing effort with Apple, but switched plans after a last-minute pitch from Sony, sources said." Also, Sony "has already announced a deal with United Airlines in which travelers, once the Connect service starts, will be able to trade in frequent flier miles for free songs," according to The Chicago Tribune. hmmm

Would have been a nice deal, but looking from the top down, I don't want Apple consorting with McFilthBurger.

Apple had a last minute pitch to replace napster in the hp deal. Now Sony has a last minute pitch to replace Apple in the McD deal.

Too bad. It would of been great pr for Apple to get this deal also.

    Wow

That would have been a huge marketing deal for Apple...

    actually,...

i think apple has almost started to over-saturate the marketing of the ipod and itunes. seriously, it feels like there is a backlash against the ipod for the constant reminders of its presence. maybe this would have been too much too soon (though i still have yet to find a SINGLE pepsi bottle with free music, which i am sure are sitting in the backrooms of grocery stores around here waiting to be stocked).

    Yes ..

It would have been nice, but if Apple could have gone lower, I think they would have.

I'm sure they did extensive cost analysis into what amounts they could put in for what cost and at what benefit. For whatever reason, they weren't willing to go as low as Sony.

Sony, I imagine, is a lot more desperate for publicity for their service than Apple is for theirs. The only question is, will it be worth it for Sony, who does not have a marquis product to tie in with their store?

    relationship with Sony

Hearing a lot about Sony and Apple (specifically the CEO's talking) recently, I wonder if Sony's music store will be Apple's Music Store rebranded?

If not, has the HP deal derailed any effort by Apple to partner with Sony in this deal?

Just thinking out of the box. It would seem expensive to launch your own music store these days since Apple seems to already have captured the market.

    Hmm...

That's no good. Operating under the general understanding that familiarity leads to success, Apple really lost out. I wonder what they weren't will to do that Sony was.

    Oh no!

Gee, Apple didn't get the deal with what is rapidly becoming a very hated company. McDonalds has so much bad PR right now I honestly think Apple is better off. They already nabbed Pepsi and woop Napster's keester. Also: Sony may have gotten that deal, but their digital music players are UNIVERSALLY HATED. Go try one sometime, or search Wired for the articles they've had about how god aweful Sony's players are and the fact that it's all because of their ridiculous software division. Rock on and move on Apple, there's nothing to bother with here.
