G5 could "prompt an image makeover" for Apple

FCW on 64-bit G5


FCW has published commentary on Apple's , "raw processing power hasn't always been Apple Computer Inc.'s claim to fame, but the company's latest crop of 64-bit desktop computers might prompt an image makeover." Todd Benjamin, Apple product manager for the Power Mac G5, said "The 64-bit G5 processor lets you use way more main memory and to do certain types of computations that aren't feasible with a 32-bit chip."

    It's about time. As a former Smithsonian employee I was appalled at the wasted expense I saw by blindly insisting on the Windows platform. Dozens of lemon Dells, or Microns, or Compaqs would have to be replaced all the time.

    When I would talk about unlimited licenses for OS X server, the IT guys would sort of glaze over; they couldn't understand it. No "mission critical" software was missing on the Mac, so we were all disgusted when the new CIO announced the S.I. was standardizing on Win2K, and that all alternative platforms would have to be requested in writing, forwarded to one very overworked employee. Dolts!

    Dubious article

    As much as I like the sentiments of this article, the credibility of the author was damaged by this one sentence: "So far, the benefits of 64-bit computing have been limited to scientific workstations and PC servers running Intel Corp.'s Xenon processors."

    Xenon? Perhaps Xeon? Please... the chip is the Itanium which hardly anyone uses. What about the AMD Opteron (which is also 64-bit)?

    Also, any author who talks about the G5 and doesn't mention the Virginia Tech super computer is either ignorant or doesn't understand it's significance.

    Sigh. Thes Wintel corporate folks are so out of it, it shows how so many tax breaks will allow even the biggest idiots to make money.
