50 Million Songs. WOW!!! That is GREAT news for iTMS. What hapened to all these people complaining that iTMS is only closed Propiatary Audio format? WMA what's that? GO APPLE!!!!!! I'm sure by this time next year iTMS could be at 100 million or more.

Napster who? BuyMusic what? Oh that's right the "other guys."

See, no one will quote Steve Jobs and run a 'news' article about his saying that no other service can ever catch them. Chris Gorog says c*** like that, and it gets printed as "iTunes Music Store falling" or some c***. Such BS.

Damned straight! You know what they say, no press is the best press! I mean, if people keep doing stories on Apple, there's some consumers and investors who actually might hear of the company and want to do business with them. What kind of idiotic CEO would want anything like name awareness or anything? Look what's happened to Worldcom, Enron, Adelphia, etc, when they got their names in the news!

Steve, please, be quiet and don't say anything unless it has to do with 2.5GHz Macs.

I'm impressed the hit 50 million when they said only like 27 million in January. And this supposedly doesn't count the free tunes (although offering free tunes puts people in the store, where they don't realize it and end up spending $100 on all the greatest disco hits of the 70's).

Unless they s**** up, or the other stores take over big time, they should be waaay over 100 million songs a year from now. With 2.5 million downloads per week, it should be more like 200 million--and that's if it doesn't keep increasing.

This press release is good and all and we get the usual sycophants posting on how great this is. Well, it is good but why hasn't Apple sold 100 million songs yet - a goal it set for itself? What, so if Napster and the other sites have not sold one tenth of the songs iTunes that makes it OK? What if Apple does not hit the G5 speed mark Steve promised? You will make excuses too?

I am all for celebrating Apple's successes. But when they have failed to deliver what is promised - be it # of songs, clockspeed ratings, defective products (white spot, G5 hum, G4 wind tunnel, etc), we need to hold Apple up to a higher standard.

First of all, a goal is not a promise; it is a mark that you strive to reach. Maybe they'll get there, maybe they won't. Personally, I don't see why it matters to you if Apple sells 100 million songs--because it was their goal? Does it somehow hurt you if they only sell 75 million songs?

Second, we have yet to see whether the 3 GHz mark will be met. I don't remember any promise that Apple would provide incremental steps along the way. And if they don't get to 3 GHz, the excuse will be that Apple doesn't make the chips, which is not a completely baseless reasoning.

Third, when did Apple promise defective products? If they did, then they met that one. ;-)

What?!

c|net: "Apple falling short of iTunes goal"

"Apple Computer said Monday that it has sold 50 million songs through its iTunes Music Store--a substantial number but far below its goal of distributing 100 million songs by April."

I keep trying to give c|net the benefit of the doubt, but this headline paragraph at the beginning of the article is some of the worst "journalism" I can remember. That's like opening a story on an Olympic gold medalist with "Child tells parents he'll win two gold medals when he grows up; falls substanially short of goal by only winning one."

First of all, that 100M figure, so far as I ever heard, was just an "out of the air" number picked by Steve to get fired up about. If memory serves, he originally picked 1M, but that went by so quick they bumped it to 10M, and after that became easy, he kicked it all the way up to 100M, just for the heck of it.

It's not like Apple issued a sales forecast, or a SEC filing, and has fallen drastically short--they're doing EXTREMELY well, far beyond competitors or their own initial hopes.

Not only that, but once you factor in the next few weeks worth of sales and the Pepsi songs, they probably will hit 100M.

Boy, that's a stupid way to report this story.

On the other hand, Apple seems to be kicking some serious butt in the market. We'll see where things take them, but according to their announcement, downloads are growing by about 20% per month. Hard to say how much of it is due to spillover from the Pepsi promotion, but pretending it's largely not, that'll put them at over 10M songs a week by the end of the year.

Makosuke: You are calling this the worst journalism you can remember? I guess you do not read much i.e Glass and Blair, do you? How about Bill O'Reily? Maybe you should get out more.

Also, Jobs is no child. He does not pull number "out the air" and "just for the heck of it". If you do not think any number or message he cited have been been carefully crafted and combed over by members of his finance, marketing, or tech department, you are dreaming.

The difference between you and ME is that I understand the difference between a sales goal and a product announcement. I agree that it will look pretty bad if Apple doesn't have 3 GHz G5's by the end of the summer. However, stating the goal of selling 100 million songs is no more than a hope--one which is really in the control of consumers. Other than the bad press of not meeting the goal, I don't see how this affects anyone but Apple. If there's no 3 GHz G5 to buy, Apple loses sales and confidence in their ability to deliver expected products. If they don't sell 100 million songs in a year, are people really going to stop buying them? Even from a stockholder standpoint, it's not that huge a deal. Apple is still way ahead of everyone else, and it's not like breaking even on 100 million songs is that different from breaking even on 80 million.

I can't agree with you more. I have argued from the very beginning that this is bad press for Apple precisely because it is not meeting its goal. Why do we have tons of people here rationalizing how it is not?

I work for a $1.6 billion company. We are careful about the numbers put out. I am sure Apple is too, which is why I am concerned as I too do not want bad press for Apple!
