    well

I'm glad I didn't buy a Microtek scanner; without a doubt, Umax's first move will be to drop Mac support, just like they did with their own scanners. Gee, maybe they could cripple them even further like they did with the Astra series, so that not even VueScan can make them work in OS X.

    RIPE

Umax is just RIPE to earn 10-15 million dollars due to it's acquisition of Microtek.

    don't forget

UMAX got f*cked by Apple back in 97 when Steve discontinued the UMAX Mac clones. Who could blame them for being kinda bummed on Apple?

    re: osX'ed

Yeah, VueScan works with some Umax scanners, but not most of the USB Astra series. This is because all they did was take a parallel port and install a parallel-to-usb converter inside. For whatever reason, OS X and/or VueScan can't work with it, so those of us with those so-called "USB" scanners are left without OS X compatibility. Shame, too -- I only owned the scanner for a year before OS X came out.

    UMAX and Mac OS X

Perhaps, if we're really lucky, UMAX will take the work Microtech has done on Mac OS X drivers, and use it to roll out a series of Mac OS X compatible drivers. Perhaps, if we're really, really lucky, those of us with old UMAX scanners (myself included) will get some support, too.

Oh, and UMAX is just RIPE to win back 10-15 thousand Mac users if they do this!
