Hitachi 400GB drive

Hitachi plans to announce this week the largest 3.5" hard drive, according to CNET News.com: "The new , spins at 7,200rpm and uses ATA interface technology..[It] can come with either the parallel ATA interface long used in desktop computers or the newer Serial ATA interface. Dubbed the Deskstar 7K400, the drive is being tested by manufacturers and could be in digital video recorder (DVR) products available to consumers later this year [for up to 400 hours of video recording]."

    2.5"

I think this is great except that I recently bought a 15" AluPB with an 80gb hd and I can't even keep all of my MP3s and documents on my computer, let along pictures and movies because 80gb is just too small. I haven't seen an increase in the capacity of 2.5" drives for quite some time, and considering that laptop sales are increasing more quickly than desktops, wouldn't it make sense to make a larger 2.5" drive that handfuls of laptop makers would buy rather than an over-priced TIVO or a drive for desktop users that need over 250gb? I'm still waiting for 100gb and I know there are others out there! My laptop stops being portable when it is tethered to an AC-powered external firewire drive.

    what???!!!

how the heck are they gonna build this? i've heard that the best right now is 100 GB per platter... so are they going to have 4 platters of 100 GB each? also, i don't think hitachi was capable of producing 100 GB per platter... wasn't that seagate? oh well... this will be interesting to see.

    Question

Would OS X be able to recognize the full 400 GB?

    372=400

372=400? What's 28 GigaBytes worth anyway... The problem of manufacturers telling lies about HD size is being compounded by the larger size hard drives...

400 x Stated size by mfg is 400 Gig
    1000 = 400 x 1000 = 400,000 MB
    400000 ◊

    400000 x
    1000 =
    400000000 ◊ 400,000,000 KB

    400000000 x
    1000 =
    400000000000 ◊ 400,000,000,000 Bytes

    400000000000 ÷
    1024 =
390625000 ◊ actual size in KB

    390625000 ÷
    1024 =
381469.7265625 ◊ actual size in MB

    381469.7 ÷
    1024 =
372.5290298461914 ◊ actual size in GB

Yes OS X can recognize it

OS X can easily recognize Xserve RAID volumes of 1.5 TB each, so 400 GB won't make it even sweat.

    400GB!

400GB sounds cool and all, but that's just a lot of data to lose in case of drive failure. I can see these drives being useful in different RAID configurations.

    RE: 372=400

    It's all about symantics:

RAM GB always has been 1024x1024x1024
Disk GB always has been 1000x1000x1000

Just to confuse you some more, when is a gallon not a gallon?

Just to lift out of computer-speak for a second, consider:

    20 liters = 4.39938315 Imperial gallons
    20 liters = 5.28344102 US gallons

Same size fish tank, same amount of water.

    4.399 gallons versus 5.283 gallons

    "Who stole my water?!?"
