Every way I look at this it just seems like they are only trying to bring in money, what real purpose is there to Tax these devices, it isn't like the government spends extra money because they exist. There were wars started over this kind of taxation.

in canada, because of these kind of taxes, downloading mp3 from P2P is legal. the thing wich is illegal is uploading.

in the same time, there's no iTunesMS is canada for stupid burocratic reason and there's all these new store using WMA not compatible with the most popular mp3 player here. so downloading free mp3 of the net is still the best way to get music for our iPod. the funniest part of this story is that we are in 2004

Well, speaking of outrageous taxes, in Iceland the music industry has forced a tax onto blank recordable media (CD etc) with the arguement that you will be using it to record your illegally downloaded music.

We've been paying that levy on blank CD-R media in Canada for some time (currently 23 cents per blank - they retail for 45-60 cents each on a 50-spindle, depending on brand, so 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost is the levy). Sucks because I almost never burn music to CD.

The levy on a 10+GB MP3 player is $25.

Eventually all recordable media will include a bevy of levies that go to all sorts of copyright holders. Even though all recordable media will probably also include physical-layer DRM. The future ain't bright.

You already pay all sorts of similar taxes on most things you buy, of course, because you have to pay for all the kinds of advertising in the world through your purchases, whether you want to or not. Unless, like me, you go out of your way to buy un-advertised products from small producers.

And if you pay the levy, does this mean we are then encouraged to copy and rip music from one another?

The same happens in the US. It's not a government issued tax, but the RIAA does collect some coinage on every blank CD and Tape sold in the US.

While it's true that we in Canada pay a special tax for iPod-like devices, they never said it was now legit to download songs we didn't pay for! In fact, the canadian version of the RIAA recently began a mini-war against the downloader. i find this a bit unfair.. they acknowledge that some of us may have some unpaid copyrighted material on the device and thus make us pay for it (the tax), but they still ask us to pay for songs we download... So a person that always pays his songs (cough!) ends up paying for others...
