Apple delinquent on French MP3 player tax

updated 07:25 am EST, Tue March 9, 2004

Apple hasn\'t paid MP3 tax

Apple to date in France, according to Ratiatum.com. France, like Canada, charges makers of such devices 10 Euros for each MP3 player that is sold in the country (15 Euros if it's larger than 40GB). Ratiatum.com is unaware of Apple's reason behind refusing to pay the tax, but speculates that the company's position could impact the opening of iTunes Music Store in France.

Every way I look at this it just seems like they are only trying to bring in money, what real purpose is there to Tax these devices, it isn't like the government spends extra money because they exist. There were wars started over this kind of taxation.

    tax makes mp3 legal

in canada, because of these kind of taxes, downloading mp3 from P2P is legal. the thing wich is illegal is uploading.

in the same time, there's no iTunesMS is canada for stupid burocratic reason and there's all these new store using WMA not compatible with the most popular mp3 player here. so downloading free mp3 of the net is still the best way to get music for our iPod. the funniest part of this story is that we are in 2004

    Whatever

Apple, just pay the damn tax. They need to get iTMS going in other countries if they want to keep increasing iPod sales.

    Waiting

Apple's just waiting for France to surrender. Maybe Steve should roll into Paris and see how long it takes for those white flags to go up and the flowers to be tossed at his feet.

    Taxes

Well, speaking of outrageous taxes, in Iceland the music industry has forced a tax onto blank recordable media (CD etc) with the arguement that you will be using it to record your illegally downloaded music.

    How c*** is that!!!!!
