updated 01:30 pm EST, Mon March 8, 2004

FileMaker 7 due this week

FileMaker on Tuesday plans to , an upgraded version of the company’s workgroup database featuring a new relational architecture and an expansion of data capacity to 8TB as well as improved security, according to Infoworld: "Version 7 features storage of binary files or documents such as Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. The Relationships Graph function provides a visual map of the database and allows users to depict and modify relationships via a click-and-drag tool. Version 7’s relational model enables files to contain more than the one-table limit of the previous version."

    This is a GREAT upgrade

This is not only a complete re-write, but contains so many 'new' features that it's like a new product under the hood.

Along with the new server as well, the new version will redefine how the product is used in companies and will help to entrench it in companies where it exists and hopefully find some new homes.

    It's very nice.

    impressive...

one wonders why it took so long, but now filemaker seems to finally be considered viable in the database market again (note i didn't say they're the best or anything -- won't know that until i actually get my hands on a copy -- but these improvements may bring them back from the edge of the chasm of "prosumer database market")

I did not buy version 6 because it really didn't offer much over 5.5. 5.5 brought OS X compatibility and record level security. Version 7 with it's multi-table security model will further the improvements. This is a must-have upgrade, I plan on ordering the Developer Edition as soon as possible.

    FileMaker 7: It sucks le

ah, gee, clearly you weren't a beta tester. little do you know moron...
our group just had a HUGE rush job, so big that it was given to 4 people to see who could do it fastest. took me 7 hours using filemaker. they liked it but wanted to see what the sql and ms a******* could do. 3 days it took them and they still went with my filemaker solution. if you want to over engineer every little thing use something that sucks more, cause you are right, filemaker sucks less.
