much he was paid to come up with the headphone trick. I already figured out if you want to be left alone/look like you are busy, just put on a pair of head phones. They don't even have to be plugged in. Someone has to really want to talk to you for them to put in more effort than calling out your name. Some social psychologist.
is the same thing as watching television, reading a book, browsing the web, or any other activity which immerses a person into another, metaphysical world. The only difference is the feeling of if the world is self-generated or one that is imposed upon you.
The only reason music can be highlighted here is because it's "taking your self-generated world with you". The same thing happens if you carry around a cell phone or PDA. The difference is it's not a constant presence. If you have on headphones, it's nearly impossible for you to interact with others meaningfully, whereas with a PDA you can stop looking at the screen for a moment.
The author has a point though. This kind of thing will get more and more prevelent as PANs (Personal Area Networks) become popular. It already is, for the most part, no longer necessary to be physically located around someone to interact with them. But I see it as just a high tech way of ignoring the other person walking down the street.
Final word. You could easily turn this story completely around and say music is a way of not dealing with reality. Don't like your world? Just tune it out.
Ripe is the best thing that ever happened to me. I love learning the new ways that ripe can be used on these message boards. I want to see a post with the word Ripe in it at least every 2 - 3 posts if not every single post. I want everyone who posts from now on to include with their serious points about the link in question, the word RIPE. You just have to put it in the bottom right or left of your post or if your feeling frisky just go ahead and put it right there in the top of the post and really advertise it. There's no way to really go wrong with the word "RIPE".
This news article is about a report published LAST SUMMER? Didn't you guys (MacNN) ever take a journalism course in college that taught you what "news" was?
Maybe this is a repost from "last summer" but for me that's the first time I read this story and I find it interesting.. stop whining every time you read an article somewhere else before.. is this site called MacFBI News Investigation network? they report interesting stories about the Mac world. If you need to access news item the second they are released hire yourself a private investigator to page you after each PR... common folks!

it's nice to know, but nothing new. If Apple were to develop all the different technologies in house, it would've been impractical.
