Dave Salvator of ExtremeTech suggest Apple should consider developing an ], but Salvator feels Apple could make such a product work. "Another upside here is that an HTPC Mac could be a kind of umbrella for Apple's iLife software suite, letting you access your photos, movies, and music in the comfort of your living room," Salvator says, "Apple has another intangible going for it: cachet. Home theater aficionados pride themselves on having top-flight equipment, often from lesser-known high-end gear makers."

I sent this to Apple.....

I posted this suggestion to Apple over a year ago. I got no response (nor did I expect one) and have had mixed reviews among my peers, mainly on the price. What do you think?

I have a product idea.
My idea is for the "iServe".

The thought is that those who have macs have more than 1. Families have 3 or more and all need access to the same data (address book, music, photos and other documents). Some machines are non-portable iMacs and some are iBooks. But all have local only profiles. The iServe would provide a complete network experience. User accounts are created on the iServe and all other machines in the house use it for Directory services. Users home directories would live on the iServe. Since the iServe has mirrored hard-drives it has built in backup. All address book, music, photos and other documents can be located centrally or in individual profiles. If the iServe is located in the living room with the TV, it can also play music through a simplified iTunes interface. It could play homemade movies and DVD's. It could also turn your TV into a "big photo album" by constantly revolving pictures from iPhoto. It could be used as the "Family webserver", print server or firewall. This is not a Xserve. It will not handle the volume or have the licensing to be one. It wouldn't have PCI/AGP slots and it's video card is just for displaying to a TV through DVI/Svideo/composite. The management software for iServe would be much simpler than OS X Server workgroup manager, but still be a full copy of Mac OS X Server. The iServe would not be a mail server or a Netboot/Netinstall server. The iServe would only support "X" number of user accounts (like 10 or 15). Price point would be around $1,000.00.

I image a G4 single cpu platform (maybe based of the G4 iMac) in a case styled similar to the G4 iMac but roughly 3" high by 16" wide by 12" deep. This simple "box" with a shallow curved front and a gorgeous silver Apple in the middle, would act as a consumer version of the Xserve.

--Dual non-removable 120/160gig harddrives configurable as RAID 0 (mirrored)
--Slot loading CD/DVD
--Low end NVIDA/ATI video with DVI, composite and Svideo output
--10/100 ethernet
--Airport (optional)
--56k modem (optional, primary internet connection through ethernet using Airport base station as internet gateway)
--Dual Firewire 400 (Mass storage expansion by consumer)
--Quad USB (support for printers, input devices and Bluetooth)
--Line level sound in/out
--Fanless with external (possible redundant) "power brick"

-Software
--Mac OS X Server w/ Family Manager (Workgroup Manager lite)
--Licensed for 10 or 15 users
--"iMedia" central, simplified interface

This doesn't solve the main problem of why mac users like me have to roll their own htpc (linux based)...it doesn't decode anything execpt mpeg2. How many full size dvd movies can you have on a hard drive. We need a set top box that decodes quicktime natively, with the ability to upload codecs to it.

One more thing for your iServe idea, a laptop power system.
If it has a battery, it can open up this new market even further.
Now, the iServe could be mounted on a cart, be unplugged for
a while and still work. It could be used in remote locations away
from the power grid and be charged by a solar panel. Now it can
be used in places like a factory floor, mounted in a vehicle or up
on a tower or remote kiosks

Apple already knows this technology well from laptops and now
this little brick would have a little self contained UPS.

If it could also be fed from Power-over-Ethernet, it could act as
an Ultra Extreme Base Station. I would also add a serial port like
the xserve has.

OS X is a really nice general purpose OS but the boxes it runs on
limits where it can be deployed. This little box could open up
all kinds of new markets.

xbox

Just use a modded xbox. With xbox media center you can stream all your music and videos from your mac to the xbox and on to your TV. You can also emulate all you favorite arcade and console games with the advantage of having them on your big screen television and using your xbox gamepads. 4 player D&D Shadows over Mystara is great. Also because of the Xbox's HDD you can create save states just like on your Mac. Some of the emulators even let you play online.

The Xbox is not only by far the cheapest solution but also one of the best... the software is excellent.

Mr. Jobs has said again and again that he believes such robust convergence between Computer and TV is not going to be successful. Something like "people sit in front of a TV to turn their minds off. They sit in front of a Computer to turn their minds on."

No, that's not the last word, but whither goes Jobs, so goes Apple.

And he's been proven right by every other attempt at this to date.
