I wish someone would just go and blow up that horrid piece of property in Redmond where you-know-what pushes out his trash they call "software" every day...
Competition between companies is always a good thing.
The hard drive is a great idea for a console, Sony is already copying them with a hard drive attachment for PS2, and now they want to get rid of the hard drive for the next version of Xbox?
That's just stupid
If Microsoft were to eliminate the hard drive from their future Xbox consoles, then all those folks who buy it for hacking may turn elsewhere. Not sure if that will make a dent or not, but shows someone put a bug up their a**.

Go Microsoft Go! Be the music monopoly that I know you are destined to become....
I don't think losing XBox hackers will make a dent in the XBox marketshare. Microsoft has proven that with enough money, its possible to do well in any market. When MS first got into the console gaming market, they lost enough money to put other companies into Chapter 11 more than once. But since they can stick around, they can outlive competitors, even if they're losing money.
Eventually companies will make mistakes they can't afford, and bite the big one. MS doesn't have to worry about that. They can make all the mistakes they want.
I'm sorry Sega, I liked your systems. *sheds a tear*
And about the hard drive thing, I think its just because nobody used them but game pirates and hackers doing things they *shouldn't* do.
If it doesn't come with a hard drive, hackers will just find a way to add one. Do you seriously believe this will curtail piracy? Ha! It'll just make it more fun!
Who needs a hard drive for gaming? Who wants to download new maps and mods and characters, or try free demos before paying money?
(All those--and my mouse--are the reasons I like my PowerBook for gaming better than any console. More portable, too--I can easily play anywhere! And it even hooks up to TV. Best of all, the same machine is my OS X workhorse.)
