Apple offers iTunes Prepaid Cards

updated 01:40 pm EST, Sat February 14, 2004

iTunes Prepaid Cards

(via iTunes) now offers an option to redeem iTunes Prepaid Cards, which apparently allow users to purchase iTunes music at a retail store (e.g., Target) and redeem it at the iTunes Music Store. Redemption requires iTunes 4.0 or later and iTunes Music Store account. According to the terms & conditoins, Prepaid Cards cannot be redeemed for cash or used to purchase additional Prepaid Cards or gift certificates. The cards expire two years from the date of issue or two years from the date of last activity on the iTunes account--whichever comes later.

    expansion = good idea
    i wonder what sort of cut they give a retailer like target for selling this
    how do they compensate them for so obviously cutting in to their album sales?

    When everywhere?

    My local grocery store (Star Market near MIT in Cambridge, MA) has had cards for Napster since Christmas. These cards should be everywhere -- in 7-Elevens, grocery stores, department stores. They cost nothing to make and distribute, and just their presence is like an advertisement for the iTMS.

    Great idea!

    Very cool idea, indeed. My neice and nephews live at the iTunes music store - what a great gift idea. :)

    Question

    How is this any different than a Gift Certificate? I guess just in the fact that it comes in pre-set denominations (and therefore is easier to sell anywhere?)

    At least in California, it is illegal for a gift certificate to have any expiration date. I wonder if these "pre-paid cards" fall under the same umbrella.

    Nice

    The benefit of these is that you can buy it in advance for someone as a gift and not have to worry about them getting the e-mail before you want them to. When I got a gift cert. for my sister's birthday, I had to ban her from checking her e-mail until she opened the gift that, among other things, told her what I got her.
