    For Crying Out Loud...

You just spent a good chunk of money on a nice new G5. Spend the extra $100 and get a new printer or whatever accessory to go with it. Serial is dead. Let it go.

    A bit old?

Isn't this a bit outdated by now? I mean, we got rid of serial in 1998 with the iMac...that was 6 years ago! If you are buying a new machine, accept that you will just plain need to buy new stuff to go with it by now. Honestly...

Well, what if the "whatever accessory" is a several-hundred dollar professional video device that is fully functional, but happens to work with a serial interface? Throw it away? Try thinking beyond your own experience, doofus. Not everyone uses $100 printers.

...or how about the several thousand (like 40) Digital Betacam decks used for uncompressed video finishing work? They use the lowly RS-422 protocol, that "old" serial connector.

    odd

the G5's internal modem is on the USB bus. how is this any different from adding a USB serial adapter?

    re: For Crying Out Loud

I'll repeat it, because I think you missed the point, "doofus"...SERIAL IS DEAD! The point wasn't about $100 printers and other cheap peripherals being the ultimate solution. That was only an example, and nothing more. My post was directed at the fact that serial peripherals of any kind have long been discontinued and some folks will spend a great deal of money on a new system but be unwilling to upgrade their other equipment to the new standards while expecting the peripheral companies to support their older, out of date gear at the same time. Do you have any idea how much that increases R&D costs that are then passed along to the consumer? Enough that many companies, Apple included, simply won't do it any more. I'm glad that there is an option from GeeThree to help people straddle the technology gap, but it's a slight stall at best, and people will wind up having to upgrade their other gear anyway, probably after experiencing all sorts of incompatibility issues and odd behavior from their peripherals. If your business or hobby is so dependent on having the latest and greatest Mac to do your work on, shouldn't that also apply to the video/audio gear that you use or whatever other peripherals you utilize to produce that work? Try thinking beyond the world that revolves around you, Copernicus. Not everyone clings to old technology and whines when the new technology doesn't support them anymore.

    I agree

I agree.. there is no point to get this for the G5. BTW, I am wondering since old devices used serial, will those work with Mac OS X? Let's say I plug in an old serial printer to the G5, will it simply work 2gether?
