SGI to sell Alias

, which provides heterogeneous shared file access over a storage area network and allows broadcast material to be shared at 25x real-time rates and real-time transfers of film resolution material.

Alias offers 3D graphics technology and services for the film, video, games, Web, interactive media, automotive, industrial design, education and visualization markets. "As an independent entity, Alias would be able to further expand its business, extend customer value and create significant growth with its products and services," said Doug Walker, president of Alias. "The investor believes that there is a great potential and synergy to having design and entertainment focused products, services and customers. The new investor has been briefed in detail on our roadmap and is attracted to Alias precisely because of our product and services portfolio."

Alias said that there will be no changes to the management team, organization, services, support or product availability as a result of the negotiations or the sale of the company.

    WTF

When will they offer sketchbook et all applications?
I don't need Maya for OS X which they have, but I
would like some of the other nifty apps they have.

Of course If I could afford it.

    ...

its abit early here...but am i reading all this?
That storage area network from SGI could be some hillarious inroad material for apple in SANs/streaming. Goes well with Apples inroads in clusters, Bio/Med-market, simulations etc.
And that investor...it cant be a no-name. Wonder why they play it down like this.

    apple involvement

i hate helping conspiracy theories, but here goes...

there was a rumor recently about apple considering a buyout of alias|wavefront not too long ago, but maybe apple just didn't want to have to deal with sgi to get the rights to maya. but if alias has sole proprietorship, then they would make a killing on the sale.

but then again, this is all based on rumors ABOUT rumors, so take it for what it's worth (a.k.a. nothing)

    It can't be Apple

It can't be Apple buying Alias-because they are in discussions with a leading private equity investment firm to acquire the company.
