PalmSource offloads Mac sync support to third-party

updated 10:15 am EST, Wed February 11, 2004

Palm OS Mac sync support

PalmSource yesterday announced that it will no longer without third-party software. Fortunately, a third party has already stepped forward.... This will allow existing Mac conduits for other third-party applications to still work. [...] Mark/Space indicated this application will probably cost about what the current one does now, about $40."

    Sony Clié

Well, Palm has barely supported Macs for quite some time. The Mac Palm Desktop software is essentially Claris Organizer from 1995 with compatibility tweaks. It does hold up fairly well, but I've not seen a comparable SINGLE application that does as much. iSync and iCal with the Apple Address Book are nearly adequate, but need LOTS of work.

Palm PDAs are hardly very compelling these days, either. Sony Cliés are better and Mark/Space's Missing Sync does a decent job with HotSyncing. Although, I can't seem to get my memory Stick to mount on the Desktop under Panther.

    Sour grapes?

Is this because iSync and iCal work with Palms now? I never use my Palm Desktop software anymore. Maybe this is just like Microsoft discontinuing IE 'cause Apple's software was so much better. Someone will create support for Palm, like the Clie missing sync software, so don't you worry.

    Palm sucks anyway

My current cell phone is smaller than a Palm, does more than any Palm I've ever owned, and syncs via Bluetooth while it's still in my pocket, no stupid cradle needed.

I suspect Palm sales amongst Mac users has decreased since Bluetooth phones with PIM functionality are where it's at for us. Palm organizers are *so* 1990's.

    WTF?

    Bad business 101:

We're already the ONLY PDA option for Mac Users. (PPC's don't count - too Windows centric and don't work with Macs out of the box)
Mac users typically have higher income than PC users.
Those with higher income have more money to buy digital accessories.
We're already the ONLY PDA option for Mac Users, so if a wealthy Mac user wants a PDA they have to buy from us.
Let's discontinue that Mac support so that now those wealthy Mac users won't buy our products.

Way to go - and these people are business whiz's?

    meh

Palmtops are a dying breed. My girlfriend and I each have one and they sit in boxes. If Palm had innovated in the past five years maybe I'd have a use for it. So until I get a phone that has enough memory to handle full contact information, I’ll keep all of that in my iPod and use my phone for scheduling, phone numbers, games, Java apps, ect...

And what with the stupid RIPE stuff? It's all stupid and stuff.

    This is bad...

As I just sent to iSync feedback (remember that iSync depends on Hotsync to work with a Palm - no Hotsync means no iSync):

Given that Palm has announced they are abandoning hotsync for Mac OS X:

Please add functionality to iSync to control the syncing process with the Palm, without being dependent on PalmSource's HotSync Manager or Mark/Space's Missing Sync. Mark/Space has an extremely poor history of support for their products and customers, and this will end up reflecting on Apple (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8068, and http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12331).

Connectivity with PDA's is a critical feature for Mac OS X (especially with the digital hub and Apple's reasonable reluctance to enter that market directly) - please do not let ths fall into the hands of an incompetent third party when you have an infrastructure almost ready. Everything that the Palm currently syncs exists in Apple's first-party applications - Address Book, iCal, Stickies (for Memo Pad), Mail, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. PLEASE upgrade iSync to directly take over the syncronization process.
