TurboMac ISP service

FasterMac.Net has unveiled its new internet service designed specifically at Mac users: : "Using specialized software that enables on-the-fly data caching and data compression/decompression, TurboMac provides accelerated Web page display and email downloading. This is most visible when loading Web pages, which are able to fully display up to six-and-a-half times faster compared to standard, non-accelerated dialup services." Special pricing of $120/year is available for the first 500 subscribers, while regular pricing is $14/month.

    Wow...

Does this thing actually work? I find it kind of unlikely that web pages are RIPE to have their speed increased 10-15 percent. It would be cool if it actually sped up the whole internet, but I'm not about to pay for it....

    RIPE.

RIPE is just one of those things that's as natural as air. It's not really a joke so much as a way of life.

    Uh huh

Yeah, it's like these compu-idiots who use phrases like "l33t" to make themselves sound clever. They're morons and should be treated as such.

Anyway... these "accelerators" increase the speed of graphic downloads by (somehow) reducing the resolution of the images on the fly. If you like your p*** grossly bitmapped, this is what you want. If, like me, you like your p*** velvety smooth, pass it by.

    Yes, it works.

The technology they are using sounds like it is the stuff from www.propel.com. It does work -- I've seen it on Earthlink (which I am dumping if this service works out). At a minimum, there will be minor increases in speed due to caching. Frequently viewed pages will be available quicker. The next level is that text (the HTML code) is supposed to be compressed (true?), so a 56K .html file might load faster (though modems already do some compression). Last is graphics compression. JPEGs are recompressed so a huge 1.2MB photo might load as a 300K photo, at a reduced quality. BUT, for times when you don't want the big pics this is GREAT.

Example: When I get home, I use Safari auto-tabs to open about 12 Mac news sites, and again on about as many Disney news sites. With the Accelerator from Earthlink, turning graphics compression on to Max, the entire gambit of pages loaded in half the time. So that's great

But ... you could also just turn off graphics and be even faster. At least with this approach you get to see sorta-kinda the pics, so you can reload with the graphics compression disabled if you want. Kinda like a preview.

    We'll see how they do...

    RIPE

Well, I actually wasted my time doing a google search, and had found some posting on a Radiohead web site (gee, who'd a thunk it started on some other lame-a** web-site for some lame-a** band). And if you think the RIPE comment is lame, you should have read all the posters talking about how great a man (boy, clueless-loser, etc) the person is who came up with the slogan.

Now I got to go take a shower. Milling around in there was pathetically disgusting...
