updated 02:00 pm EST, Tue February 10, 2004

iCal Backup beta released

MacNN reader Tom Sheppard today released the beta version of , an AppleScript application that backs up one or more Apple's iCal calendar files at custom intervals: "iCal Backup runs as a companion to iCal and silently backs up your calendars only when the calendars have changed since the last backup. Should you ever need to restore an event, to-do or even a whole calendar you can select only the calendar you wish to restore and from what point in time. Your old calendars are not overwritten." A demo of the $9 application is available.

    What's the point of this

Why not just set up a crontab to create a backup whenever the file has changed, or at certain intervals, or whatever? Or why not set up a free WebDAV site which iCal automatically backs up to already whenever a change is made?

    Why pay $9 for this?!

    Ease of backup & restore

Most iCal users do not have the skill to set up a cron job. A WebDAV site only syncs your latest, possibly damaged version. iCal Backup can save up to 999 versions. Restoring something you've manually backed up is difficult if you just want to pick and choose individual events to restore. How do you get iCal to recognize the restored file? If you manage to do this somehow, then the unique calendar and event IDs conflict with your existing calendar and iCal gets hopelessly confused and shows some events but not others, seemingly at random. iCal Backup resolves all these issues for you. Is it worth $9? How much is your calendar data worth?
