    great software

Snapz Pro is great software, but I stopped using it a few years ago just on principle, when the writers threw a hissy fit about people pirating it. I mean, I understand copyrights and they're certainly entitled to their money (which I sent them, for version 1.0), but that's no excuse for immaturity. I'll stick to companies that don't go stomping and screaming like a child the moment someone illegally uses their software, thanks. And you know what? I haven't really missed not using Snapz Pro, so it's just as well.

    $70???

This was a nifty little utility, and presumably 2.0 is even better... but $70 for a screenshot utility? Please!

I do pay my shareware fees and would probably pay $20 for this. Sorry Ambrosia but $70 ain't happening.

    Nah.

Ambrosia is a company that lives in the go-go past. When I had $$$ I -did- pay for this app and the motion capture, and it -did- pay for itself. The anti-piracy measures that they have are a PITA for anyone who works in a corporation who needs access to the software -- and smacks of someone who used to -be- a pirate.

However, and despite their tests on a top of the line G5 machine of their new motion capture, I see nothing compelling to upgrade -to-. Optimizations are part of the biz, and Ambrosia better understand this by now.

They're overcharging for a few bugfixes and a breakout of the UI -- and probably optimizations that most of us (who don't own G5s) will see for another year or two.

Hopefully they don't go the way of Cassidy and Greene -- another company that overcharged, whined about piracy, and came from an older generation of pirates.

    Uninformed

You guys really sound uninformed. Have you already tried Snapz 2 or are you basing your conclusions on something else altogether? The performance of SP2 on a three-year-old PowerBook is stunning and for anybody who actually needs ths software the $69 cost (or $20 upgrade) is a no-brainer. If you can't justify the cost don't but it, but don't poo-poo it for those who do need the software.

    Try it out 1st

Give Snapz 2 a shot. I use it all the time and swear by this program as the only way I can take screenshots for the work I do. Yes, I use this in my day to day professional work.

To respond to people's comments, before you make yourself sound ignorant, you guys should get your facts straight.
    1. Upgrades are only $20.
    2. It's not $70 for a screenshot util. It's $29 if a first time buyer. It's $70 only if people need to capture movies. That's a pro feature.
    3. It's not just a redesigned UI. There are many benefits and other new features that are in there... just like Mac OS 10.3. Apple redesigned the Finder to make it better. I paid for that! Try things before mocking them. This version is quite nice.
    4. Optimizations are NOT just for G5 owners. My G4 captures the movies FAR better that the previous version.
    5. As for the anti-piracy stuff. Ambrosia is better than $1000 programs such as QuarkXPress which make you CALL them up and WAIT for a new pass code. You never wait for Ambrosia to get back to you since the registration app generates a new code based on your old valid one. They ONLY people that have a problem are the pirates. I for one don't have a problem with people trying to protect their money. While Ambrosia's first attempt at this wasn't perfect (this is going back a while from today), they QUICKLY fixed it to make it a good system.

Let's not flame people on these comment forums please. Think a while before posting.

Have to agree with your points. The Mac community's hysterical knee-jerking is annoying especially when it comes from the few who couldn't be bothered to actually GO to Ambrosia's site to read up on the changes AND pricing. To add to your point: The upgrade for 1.x w/o movie capture to 2.0 w/o movie capture is..wait for it...FREE.
Have a look at the other prices and you'll conclude that Ambrosia is still by far one of the better sw makers.
Enough with this 'I want things free or else" attitude

    Geeze

I originally got this app for the movie capture ability. Turned out I needed an amazing machine to make it at all useful so I was pretty disappointed but the screen capture abilities came in great especially the ability to capture objects.

Now with this release my Powerbook G4 can capture 30 frames per second video of movies that are playing in another format. This means your closed formats like WMV and Real are no longer closed because you can make a high qualitiy copy of them into any format Quicktime can handle. This is enough to justify the cost for me. I'm overjoyed with this release. And their registration app works fine through the proxy server at my job.

    re: Try it out 1st

Just to clarify... (I was the one who posted the original "great software" comment) While I admit that part of my reason for not using Snapz anymore was because I no longer needed it as much, their ridiculous response to the piracy a few years ago really pissed me off, so I just stopped using it altogether just on principle, even though I had already paid for it. I'm not part of the "I want all software to be free" crowd; I'm part of the "piracy is just a part of the software business that you're going to have to accept and live with; if you can find a way to prevent it, great, but then don't go whining and screaming like a 2-year-old on your company's website when your methods fail" crowd. Sorry if this upsets those of you who worship the almighty infallible Ambrosia. If you can't find ways to circumvent piracy, that's your own problem; no need to go blaming your customers.

First I was agreeing with your post and did not lump you in the want-for-free-crowd. But now that you've expounded: Good Lord man, you're still pissed after all these years? Get over it will ya..it's only friggin software. Secondly, if Ambrosia chooses to admonish those who pirate in which ever way suits them, why do you feel targetted? So you penalize a company by not supporting them further because you seem to think they lump all their customers in one pirate-laden bag? Silly indeed..

Yeah, once I typed out what really happened, I did realize it was pretty silly to hold a grudge. I'll probably try out 2.0 just to see what the new features are like. As I said, because I didn't really have much need for Snapz Pro at the time, the "principle" thing was sort of that whole story with straws and camels' backs... but that's long past now. :)
