G5 Mod is a joke, hoax

Techworld.Com reports the : "The G5 case shown on the website was given to the author empty (though somebody must have removed its innards one supposes) and he simply filled it with PC workings and then photographed his own working G5 with the side of the case off. Concocting a far-fetched anecdote around the wheeze and sending it off to a website was probably not the best move however. In a matter of two days he claims to have received 1,300 messages of contempt, disgust and incomprehension."

While it is hard to believe that somebody would gut a $3000 computer, and replace the innards with less powerful and inelegant components it is even more difficult to accept the modder's explanation of this action as a hoax. It seems obvious to me that the first photo of the unmodded G5 is taken from the same camera and location as the rest of the pics. He certainly removed a cooling fan from the case to photograph it as well. His second story seems more contrived and far fetched than the first. I think he's just doing some damage control here. He did what he claimed in the first case, maybe not in the exact circumstances as described, but he did it.

This was seriously a great hoax. It made me laugh, and laugh, and laugh again. The funniest is that some people are still upset about it.

What was _funny_ was to read the outraged comments of so many _Windows_ addicts. If anyone bothered to read the forums on the site this was posted on, most of the people on those sites were Windows/Intel/AMD fans, and THEY were outraged, and very friendly to the Mac folks.

As to it being a hoax? Folks, I work for an Apple VAR/Consultant here in Boston, and we have two of those G5 cases in the office - it's a service part, runs around $300. I was gonna borrow one and replicate this guys hoax, but say I'd turned it into a bookshelf, although I like the toaster oven idea. :)

If it was true, it was an offense against common sense. Since it's _not_, it's funny. Re-lax, and appreciate a good joke....:)

Yes, but they weren't angry because a thing of beauty had been sullied, they were pissed because he would have hugely devalued his parent's gift behind their back instead of selling it for lots of $$$. It was a good example of how most PC-centric boards aren't populated by a bunch of zealots though.

There was no, "OS uX, CrApple, MacIntrash," or anything like the usual garbage you see every other post here, "PeeCee, M$, Windoze, Sheeple, Lemmings..."

Zealot....

Hmm, someone seems really hung on on identifying people as "zealots". First off, "Offense against common sense" was just a fancy way of saying "moron".

Second off, clearly you didn't actually read the board over at OverClockers, LOTS of the windows people were pissed because a "thing of beauty had been sullied", as a number of them stated how much they liked the design of that box. (It is nice, although not as nice as a G4 IMHO).

As far as the tone, the people in that forum (OC), both "sides" made sure to keep it reasoned and intelligent, and not decent into foolishness like calling people "zealots". :)

Me? I considered it an offense against common sense, simply because he could sold the G5, and bought a case and $2K worth of parts rather than torching a perfectly good machine.

That is, if it had been real... which it wasn't.

Lastly, if you're coming on discussion areas of Websites looking for reasoned discussion without inane BS Like "Macintrash", "WinD'Oh'S", Trash-80, etc, you are SO in the wrong place. :)
