Computerworld dubs the Xserve G5 a 'dream machine'

Xserve G5: \'dream machine\'

Computerworld has posted a , noting that it is up to 60% faster than its predecessor: "Focusing solely on the hardware, the new Xserve just wows me. It has one or two 2-GHz G5 processors, uses 400-MHz ECC RAM and has a dedicated front-side bus running at 1 GHz. Add to that the ability to support up to 8GB of RAM, and you have the makings of the fastest Mac ever conceived. But Apple didn't stop there. Each of the three drive modules contains dedicated 150MB/sec. controllers, and the Xserve supports 100- and 133-MHz PCI-X cards. Rounding out its impressive technology pedigree are two onboard Gigabit Ethernet ports, each with its own dedicated controller."

    Ironic

Meanwhile, Intel intros new P4s up to 3.4 GHz that put off more than 4X the heat of a G5 at 2 GHz (see previous story).

Try putting a couple of those in a 1U server. NOT!

    Prescott Leakage

Of those 100 watts the new P4's dissapate, 40 watts is due to leakage currents in the chip. That's right, leakage current. Those suckers will draw more power in sleep mode than a G5 does running flat out. (Never did like Intel chips, starting when I first programmed an 8080 controller.)

    Graphic Limitations..

Is there a good reason why I should get a G5 xServe if I want to do video application, with the possibility of adding another xServe in the future?

Is there any graphic limitation to this idea?

    Any tips?

    Graphic Limitation

the GPU isn't as good in the XServe as it is in the PMG5.

Check the AGP bus speed. I think it is slower too.

    IBM SOI reams intel

Did you hear the rumor that IBM is going to ream Intel to license SOI technology for their chips? If this is true and Intel has to eat it, they'll be having more anal leakage than current leakage when it's over.

    Intel. yesterday's technology, here today!
