Column: should Apple buy Pixar?

updated 02:20 pm EST, Fri January 30, 2004

Apple & Pixar

CNN/Money columnist Paul R. La Monica asks, now that Pixar and Walt Disney have gone their separate ways, " Both companies are run by Steve Jobs, and, with its success in online music, Apple is beginning to look "more and more like a content company." Independent media researcher Dennis McAlpine says "It's an interesting idea [...] The basis of Pixar's success is computer animation and Jobs is trying to get more into music and entertainment." Pixar's market value, as of Thursday's market close, was $3.6 billion.

    Morons

This is no better than the speculators before a MacWorld conference, except these guys might actually influence those that move the market.

    Wouldn't this...?

Wouldn't this be a conflict of interest on Steve Jobs' part???

Is it much different than it is today anyways? but I question the benefit since Jobs IS in control of both?

iTMS will one day have iTVS (video), Pixar has content. iTVS would of course also sell everyone elses video.

Wonder how many years before we'll see this sorta thing.

    A bug's life

This would be great if Apple bought Pixar.. Then we could finally see development of, "A Bug's Life- The Story of MS Windows"

    No!

That would not be a wise move. Because Apple is not good at marketting!!

    Shut the h*** up Paul

Yes. The ONLY thing Pixar ever needed from Disney is distribution channels. Yea, Apple is known for it's great movies and will get Pixar movies in theatres across the nation. People will see Apple and think "wholesome family movies". Idiot.

    strength in numbers

Keep 'em separate. Many movie goers have no idea what an apple computer is, but they are developing name recognition of the creator of "all those movies my kids like"

More autonomy when separate. Shareholders in Pixar would appreciate that. Maybe even some employees.

THe fact that Steve Jobs is the leader of BOTH always seems to get Apple Computer mentioned in the same sentance as everytime Pixar is discussed. Now that's free advertising!

    What an article!

Seems like the guy had a deadline and needed to come up with a story. But to see the real professionalism of this story, check this out:

One person on Yahoo! Finance's Apple message board seemed to embrace the possibility, titling a post "Apple + Pixar= iCartoons."

Yes, he's quoting someone on Yahoo's message board, a place that makes the MacNN boards seem civilized and intelligent.

    little benefit

i don't see how this would benefit either parties unless Apple solely supplies all computers to Pixar and Pixar benefits substantially in productivity by updating their computers every year. Even then, Apple doesn't need to waste their money to buy out a company to do that.
