New multiport Gigabit Etherent PCI cards for G5s

updated 12:20 pm EST, Fri January 23, 2004

Multiport Gigabit Etherent

Small Tree Communications today began shipping "the first" dual-($250) and quad- ($550) port for the Power Mac G5 and G5 Xserve. Small Tree says the cards provide an immediate performance gain over the Power Mac G5's internal Ethernet port through the use of jumbo frames. The NICs are 64-bit/133Mhz PCI-X network interface cards containing independent 10/100/1000 megabit ports on one PCI-X adapter. The cards work with Small Tree Communications' IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation software which provides automatic load balancing and fail over of network traffic.

    Need Pure Optical Fiber

Someone needs to develop a pure optical fiber gigabit
card as this is a better solution to connecting computers
together since the cable is much more flexible and the range is extremely better, up to 500m I believe

    5 volt

The card's specs say that it is a 5 volt card. I thought that the G5 only took 3.3 volt cards?

    Jumbo Frames

Actually, the PCI card Gigabit Ethernet port on the XServe support jumbo frames. So that's not 100% true. I use it on my XServe and it's great, especially for video work.

OK, so this is not all that wow-awesome.
