Sonnet today announced it is shipping its , which are compatible with the Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics Power Macs (as well as Beige G3 Power Macs). Sonnet says that these are "the only G4 upgrades to extend Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics machine performance beyond 500MHz." The new Encore models utilize the 745X series of Motorola G4 processors, with 256KB L2 and 1MB of SDR L3 cache. The 800MHz version is $350, while the 1GHz version is $500. They carry a three-year warranty. The company also lowered the price of its 700MHz model to $300 ($50 drop).

    Holy Jeebus...

    ...$500 is a lot of moo-lah.

I'd rather snag up one of the G4 450 ZIFs from OWC, which they just lowered the price on, for $135 and overclock it to 550MHz or so...

    You

You gotta assume at this point, that all 3 use the same processor? Which means the $300 should be able to clock up to 1GHz, because they are all probably identical, and the slower ones are just clocked down...

    500 Bucks!

Heck. After football season ends with the Superbowl, no more 12 ounce curls. I'll be able to put that aside in 2 months!

    Not bad, actually.

They are a bit pricey, but let’s face it—it’s still cheaper than an eMac, and I don’t have to re-buy RAM, a faster CD-RW, faster graphics card, etc. My beige G3 is still purring along and doesn’t show any signs of stopping!

It would be interesting to see if the 700MHz and 800MHz are underclocked, tho. It would seem the 800MHz eMacs have an underclocked 1.25GHz, so it’s certainly possible!

    800MHz for B&W G3

The $350 800MHz G4 with 1MB of L3 sounds like a good price-performance combo. At the office, I'm currently running a blue & white G3 with a 900MHz G3 in it, and while its not bad, it can get easily bogged down. The 800MHz G4 & 1MB of L3 cache could really help things along.
    Hmm... Got me thinkin'...

    Looks like ...

the big difference between the 800 Mhz and the Ghz upgrade is the cooling. The pictures on their site show the 800 Mhz with a big heat-sink, and the Ghz with a heat sink and fan.

I've been thinking about a G5, but this would be so much cheaper ... Hmmm.

    Well, let's see...

I've already invested in 1GB RAM, an internal Toshiba CD-RW, an ATI Radeon 7000 PCI graphics card, a 120GB hard drive, and a USB bluetooth adapter for my old Yikes G4. The only thing missing from this equation is... a faster processor! FINALLY!

$350 to DOUBLE the speed of my computer will last me for another couple of years at least. Cheaper than paying $3000+ for a new low-end G5 and 20" flatscreen!

    Rumour has it...

That it's going to run your bus at 66MHz. Check out the forums on xlr8yourmac
