    re: search engines...

well, duh. both microsoft AND netscape have abused this, but automatically redirecting generic URL requests to their respective search engines, rather than the ".com" equivalent (or, best of all worlds, offer the option to check ALL variants at once, or pull up auto-completed URLs from the verisign database). it's a testament to google that it has managed to create a product so effective that it has garnered a strong following despite this.

    no surprise

Why should anyone expect Microsoft to live up their end of the antitrust agreement? They have never ever complied with any of the previous antitrust agreements and they have never been punished for any of their violations. What motivation is there for them to abide by this one?

    SHOCKED, I tell you!

    Whaaaaa?

You say that Microsoft, who have never obeyed a court order in their corporate history are now ... GASP! ... not obeying a court order? You say they are continuing to abuse their desktop monopoly exactly as many critics predicted when the slap-on-the-wrist settlement was announced?
I am SHOCKED, sir! SHOCKED I tell you, and perhaps (and I mean this sincerely) ... even a little APPALLED.
    DAMN YOU BALLMER!!!!

    Squeeze . . . is . . .

just like a fresh cup of lemonade . . . except that the MS version of this drink is:

    * only available if you give a zillion digit license key; and probably at that you've have to pay double for a decent cup, ice, and still imitates a refreshing drink anyways

    * backwashed a little with some vile foul-play; but, nonetheless 95% of the world (doh) likes drinking snake venom . . . even if it says you can't trust it in the news . . .

    * you have to make sure to type ctrl-alt-del before you get any of this ecckkkX-Peee to go down

    * trashing all the other drink stands

    * invariably, there's bound to be a worm or two somewhere in the cup -- pass some o' that fine swill over here!

    This is not surprising

    A few comments on this:

    1) Many countries have state-sponsored broadband adoption; South Korea is a good example. This heavily influences how many citizens have access to broadband. Remember France and their MiniTel?

    2) All broadband is not created equal; there is no strict definition for it, and what passes for "broadband" in many countries is rather ridiculous by comparison to the broadband routinely offered in the US. Many "broadband" providers in Europe amount to a glorified modem, in other countries such as Australia the broadband has metered usage, and a "hard cap" if you download too much. (this varies from ISP to ISP, of course, but as a general rule, it applies).

    3) Countries like Iceland have 93% of the population in one small city, which is perfect for broadband providers. The same goes for Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, and so on.

All of this put together, I don't find these results surprising it all. There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. In this case, the statistics don't lie, there is just more to the story.
